No in-ear monitors, no floor monitors, no auto tune, no mic on a stand in front of him. Just overheads and raw talent. A 21 yr old well and truly ahead of his time.⚡️

Nobody reached that level of charisma compressed in 2-3 minutes. Elvis had it all. He reinvented the meaning of charisma.

Hard to believe he was only 21 here. So much talent and charisma. An absolute icon ❤

Saw him twice, seen many of the greats, never have I watched an artist like him, no equal. Sold over a billion records according to Guinness.

Elvis was the true original, everyone who came after had the luxury of having had Elvis leading the way. He was totally self taught talent, his guitar, piano and his most powerful asset that amazing voice. I often think we forget Elvis was only 21yo here, on TV in front of 54 million US citizens, he drew so much wrath from the establishment because he was from the south and it was the height of segregation and he was singing and moving like the black singers of the time, so I think he was very courageous to have stuck with this and not bowed to the power of the establishment. Great video analysis as always, really love when u focus on Elvis.

For me, the best part is how much fun Elvis is having with this performance. And then we have fun right along with him.

It’s 2023 and his voice still sounds like the future of Rock’n Roll

Elvis always seemed to be sharing a joke with his audience, and by doing that he invited his audience to participate (scream). He never seemed to take himself too seriously. I think that was part of his charm.

Fil - imagine tuning into Ed Sullivan in 1956 and seeing this! I was young, but my older sister, 14 years old was screaming at the TV as Elvis performed. Mine was a musical house so my Mom and Dad also enjoyed his performance. Notice how Elvis cups his left hand behind his ear at 2:17 and other times to check if he's on pitch. My own revelation to Elvis came when RCA issued an LP called the Sun Sessions. OMG - I had thought his career began with "Heartbreak Hotel" but those 5 Sun singles set my hair on fire. What made Elvis unique is his love of music, be it pop, country, rhythm and blues or gospel. He just loved it all. Later in my life both D.J. and Scotty both recounted to me how crazy it got and the abuse they faced by simply being "white" and playing "black" music in the deep south in those early years. Stories that haven't appeared in any book. Elvis was the Big Bang of rock and roll, but it was a group effort. He needed Scotty, Bill and later D.J. and they became the template for a rock and roll band of drums, bass, rhythm and lead guitar. Take away Elvis' rhythm guitar on those early Sun records and they aren't the same. He was every bit a part of the sound. Loved your analysis.

We got used to Rock and Roll performers to get deep and hard and mean and rebellious ect. But when you see ElViS everyone can’t help but smile because it feels so good watching him.

Me and some friends saw an Elvis concert here in Detroit on April 1977 basically just to say we saw him live. But what we saw that evening was absolutely spectacular. He was obviously out of shape and not well, but his voice did not waiver and he brought the stadium now. Fil you're right about him about his musicianship. Keep them coming please. Rock on

It’s the KING!! Elvis Presley, the world’s Greatest!! What a GREAT Entertainer!!! Ironically he had no idea how huge he would become worldwide!! He’s a one in a million! He had such a natural musical voice and ability he didn’t even have to focus on that. That ability gave him the freedom to just entertain! AMAZING! Thank you for this one! Elvis never gets old!

Thanks so much for emphasising Elvis's musical talent. He is so underrated for his arranging of songs and piano/guitar playing, all of which he is pretty competent at. I've always thought, since watching his early Vegas shows back when I was a teenager, that he had music flowing through him from head to toe, so he can't help moving to it. These early shows must have been like punk rock for those times!

WHAT a fun, free-spirited performance! Elvis is clearly enjoying himself….teasing the girls in the audience with his facial expressions, shoulder movements…and those GYRATIONS! He was such a special iconic entertainer and singer. I firmly believe this man could have continued touring for as long as he wished. He had the whole world spellbound with his persona and musical talents. He could have brought us so much more of his wonderful music if only he could have survived his fame. What a tragedy.

This man is the perfect example of charisma, appeal, dancing skills, presence in front of an audience, and of course his wonderful voice, all in one adorable. Great analysis Fil!!

Scotty Moore, and those drums, that bass, that voice. Good God. That’s a lightning bolt from the sky. The spark that ignited John Lennon to form The Beatles, got the whole ball rolling. Spot on analysis, as usual. 👍👍

First, bravo and thank you! This is special to me. On the night he died, they played a lot of '56 "wiggling" TV performances, this among them. It's special because as I finally drifted to sleep still in tears at about 4 AM, this particular performance (the shots from behind and above) was acting as an "eye-worm" on me. I have no explanation as they played a LOT of other clips. It's my last image of him from the last 24-hour-period when he had been alive. So many thanks for the deep dive.

Guitarwise, it's such a simple song; Elvis was only thickening up the sound. Scotty's just having fun. All very relaxed and casual.

But scoot forward 20 years. New Year's Eve, 1976, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. "Reconsider Baby." Watch Elvis play the guitar. It's a very bluesy blues! Just watch him play. It was one last one for the . . . end of the road. He'll never see another new year. And he decided to do a little something on guitar. Heck, it was New Year's - a night to "hang loose" as Elvis would say. "Reconsider Baby" December 31, 1976, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Whenever you get the chance.
