You don’t need 30 apps on your phone for it. I have a Sony Bravia 3 yr old android TV. and I use just the one remote that comes with the tv. I have my home theater setup with arm and my home theater is controlled through that. You can also tell “hey google” and put on anything you want on YouTube (Netflix is not supported yet in android tv. You can do it if you have a chrome cast though). This setup works seamlessly and it has a sense of satisfaction with the physical remote and being able to use all those apps that you pay for can be installed on the tv is the icing on the cake.

Anything for a bare-bones setup? No live services. No wi-fi connected tv. Just a basic remote to change the channel and occasionally, the source.

OK, but a bit vague. Also, does this only apply to the U.S? What about the U.K.? I know we are only a very small and highly insignificant "country, " but we do have needs too. Thanks.

All I heard was that Android phones are best for this. Yep.

It would be better if your smartphone had an IR blaster. It would work with pretty much everything and you don't need to download a bunch of apps. Loving my LG phone for this.
