Domino World 2019: Machine Close-Up

Last week, I had the incredible opportunity of participating in Domino World, the annual domino and machine event organized by bpdoles at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum in Ann Arbor, MI. Here is a close-up of the machine I made for the event!

This machine is kind of strange to me. Around halfway through the week of building, I was strongly considering not uploading a close-up video like this because I wasn't all that proud of the machine. At that point, I had built the snake tail track, the gear double pendulum, and the flexing track parallelogram. All three of these tricks are great, but they didn't have a good flow between them, they weren't built in great locations to be easily viewable by the audience, and they were not the best choice for live event tricks. But then I rounded out the building week with three tricks that were the complete opposite: the Mukmobile, the grabby tube, and the magnet tracks. These three fit really well within the machine, had great connections, and were excellent live event tricks. These three tricks turned things around for me and made me like the machine again. So I'm not sure what I learned here, but I guess just because it's a good trick does not mean it's a good live event trick!

0:21 Lol this is sooo weird and trippy, but it's definitely something that you would take advantage of and use in a machine. Great idea. 0:27 o o o h m u k k y. Nice fusion of the autotilt and the ball falling into cup. Not sure if that was on purpose or not, but it's a great idea nonetheless. Great theming (theme-ing?) too. 0:46 I'm assuming that you saw this in Gabe's video and thought it was amazing, so you wanted to try it out. Honestly, me too haha. Did it ever occur to you that you could change out the scoop of your ball scooping trick for something else, because it never did to me. 0:54 Yooo this one looks soooo cool. The idea of bending a track at two joints and the way those 90 degree bends flip into place is flawless.


Yeah I knew this machine would be golden before I even watched it. Well done man, I'm glad you were able to participate this year, because you made a wonderful addition to the team!! Can't wait to see what you do in San Jose.

Excellent work! The clear tube trick and the rotating Hot Wheels and Trix Trax tricks were super satisfying. Very clean machine! Loved it.

My favorite was the Muk Muk ping pong ball trick which I will never comprehend how it actually works

I think this is my favorite table from the event. Most of the ideas here are things you would think of when making a machine, and then dismiss because you couldn't find a way to make them without it being too complex or messy. The half tube, "mukmobile", and rotating hot wheels tracks were my top tricks.


Also what went through your head when making the half tube trick?

Wow. Also, did this work all the way during the fall down?
P.S: the extended arm cup trick was my favorite.
