He is really protective of Korra and I love that. We don't really see it with other avatars since we're introduced to them so late in their lives, but Tonraq sees Korra as his daughter first, avatar second. He'll do anything to protect and loves her deeply, but still knows how to stand back and let her fulfill her duty as the avatar.

I like how he doesn't hold korra back and knows she can protect herself ( i mean she's the freakin avatar but still). That cooperation in the fight against zaheer is very satysfing, korra is chained up but she can still kick butts, and tonraq isn't even distressed, he's aware of his daughter abilities and doesn't act overprotective

For those who are talking about how much his bending style is like earthbending, I think it’s also because most of his fight scenes are in the South Pole where the ground is mostly made of ice. So he can execute those earthbending style movements since the “earth” is actually water.

Tonraqs way of waterbending is so unique and it caught my attention when i first saw it. He tends to use ice very often and his skills remind me of that of an earthbender

he's from nothern water tribe but he is proficient in southern style which more aggressive. he also proficient in ice wall which is move mostly done by earth bender.
