What about the winch in and out wires, where do they hook up and how are they reversing the polarity? Do you have a 6 pin switch to operate the winch and how is that wired?

You were actually correct when you called it a relay. This starter relay was used on all Ford, Ford, Mercury and Lincoln vehicles for a lot of years. I used the same relay when I installed a Warn winch on my ATV since I didn't buy the complete (and overpriced) kit. I sold auto parts for years and 95 percent of my customers erroneously called it a solenoid, so don't feel bad, it's an extremely common mistake. GM products used solenoids, Ford products used relays. When energized, both get magnetized and give some mechanical movement. In a relay, this mechanical movement is used to turn on/off switch contacts while in a solenoid, the mechanical movement is used for some other work like moving a plunger.

The Ford solenoid is not meant to be used as a constant on part like the ones for winch. There are solenoids on Ebay, and amazon for about $19.99 I personally wouldn't take the chance for $5.00

Those White brand solenoids were recalled due to causing fires

You pay thousands of dollars for an ATV, and skimp on an important electrical part that can fry your system if hooked up wrong, all for $30… unless you’re in a bind and need the part or a poor high school kid, don’t be so cheap.
