for premiere users, samurai sharpen is a cool plugin. it gives you some good mask options, so you don't sharpen the background or the noise in your shot. :)

Hello Harv. I have just subscribed to your site as I have recently purchased a Sonya7sll and find your videos to be extremely informative. With all due respect, I would like to address the persona that you present in your opening...the distorted face and like..sometimes in your demonstrations..not needed, you are fine as you are without without the schtick. All the best, Gordon

100% agreed, just now testing sharpness at hard sun light ( aps-c ) with sharp. levels at normal i'm getting lots of weird looking contrast detail problematic in post, on contrary interior and low-light sharpness is very useful to get clearer image after a noise reduction pass.

At 4:12 you talk about in-body sharpening; I have an EOS-R and in Canon Log recording you have to increase the sharpening in camera, otherwise you will have an inherently soft image, which you cannot make sharper in post. Canon does this intentionally, you have the option to make a pleasing looking softish "cinematic" image, vs a sharp videocamera-looking image.

I've honestly been doing this and have been meaning to make a video on it, the SLOG2 set to -7 Detail is very bad, I settled on -2. The thing with the Sony's is, it's not a sharpness slider like you get in most cameras, the Detail setting actually has a bunch of complex settings that make up the Detail values. Detail differs from sharpness in the sense that you cannot get that detail back by sharpening in post, sharpness is not the same as detail. The Detail setting in the Sony's is a combination of both. This also the reason for the misconception of "Sony footage is soft", it's not, SLOG2 default is soft.

Great video as always. There's just one major thing you missed here. Nail your focus everytime with focus magnification and peaking. 70% of videos aren't sharp because focus wasn't nailed. Nailing focus combined with these tips and you're winning 🤛🏽

There are differences in post- and in camera sharpening and that is the compression. When sharpened in camera it is done in 14bit uncompressed video. So, when you know your lenses well and have the time during a shoot, you might benefit from adjusting incamera sharpening according the used aperture.

Secondly: Sharpening in editing demands a lot of processing power of your computer and slows down your editing speed.

Great video Harv, super informative and well done! Thank you very much! I I was wondering, is there a similar tool as the FCPeffects sharpening plug-in for the PC world such as for AfterEffects or Premiere Pro? Sorry, no FCP here, I'm a lame and poor for Windows user:) Thanks again for your video:)

A good set of suggestions to keep in mind. Thanks for this.
Still prefer manual shooting with 3rd party lenses. Maybe I'll change my mind, but so many modern lenses seem cold or sterile, and with focus by wire you don't have the sensitive control and subtle nuances you can get with, say, with canon FD lenses or Rokinon cinema lenses----mostly useless for run and gun video until IBIS.

Great tips! :) Quick question. Whenever I put my lens to a wide open aperture I keep seeing a dust or smudge mark. I look at the lens and I can't seem to find where it actually is though. Any ideas?

Hi Harv! Really nice video - my NLE of choice is Premiere Pro: what plugin/s would you recommend for Premiere?

Love your work as always. Are you aware of a sharpening plugin like this for Premiere Pro?

Their video demo of the product makes me feel like it's not any better than shadow/highlight combined with some unsharp masks and such, but it looks quicker to manipulate quickly.

Is your vocal track balanced left a bit? Sounds odd in my headphones

Any tips for my situation? I have my a6300 shooting in 4k24, with an in camera sharpness of around 2 or 3.
The files that come from it look stunning on my computer and 4k TV, but as soon as I put it into premiere, the quality seems to go down, and it doesn't look as sharp and detailed... And even after export it still doesn't look as good as the original files... I'm exporting to h264 4k around 50mbps for YouTube.

And then when uploaded to YouTube it looks nothing like what people have posted online using the a6300 and same lens combo.

I would honestly rather shoot in 1080p because of the file size difference, but the A7III's 1080p video looks so much worse than 4K downsmpled that I make myself cope.
