Patella Tendon Repair

A patella tendon rupture is a tear of the tendon that connects the kneecap (patella) and the tibia. The symptoms of a patella tendon rupture include pain around the knee, a “popping” sensation, and difficulty walking. If imaging is taken of the knee, the patella can be seen elevated from its normal anatomical position.
Treatment for complete patellar tendon ruptures is surgery.
A patellar tendon rupture procedure, the patient is brought into the operating room, and laid supine (on the back). The injured leg is draped and prepared with tourniquets placed around the leg. Using a blade, a midline incision is created centered over the patella down to the tibial tuberosity. Retractors are placed, and dissection is continued down to the patella and the patella tendon. The patellar tendon is identified and prepared using surgical instruments. The inferior (bottom) pole of the patella is also prepared with surgical instruments. Stitches are placed in the tendon, and holes are drilled from the inferior pole of the patella to the superior (top) of the patella. The sutures placed in the tendon are passed through the corresponding drill holes and tied on the superior pole of the patella.

Following a patellar tendon repair, physical therapy is recommended. With therapy, patients are expected to regain full range of motion of their foot or ankle within 6-12 months.

The injury that prevented Ronaldo Nazario from becoming the greatest of all time.

The very last statement in the video about the patellar tendon moving the foot or ankle is completely wrong. The patellar tendon moves the leg at the knee.

6 years later and my knee is great post op. It took several months of rehab to get full rom. Getting the strength back in my quad took a few years. Your quad muscles basically dissolve during recovery because your not allowed to move your knee for 6 weeks.

my rupture was in the middle not off the bone, doc said it was shredded and stringly like crab meat with the primary tear being in a zig zag pattern. year and a half later workers comp settled with me, the scar tissue was so bad my rom was not getting any better.

Dose the knee ever go back to a 100 percent?

Mine was slightly different the whole tendon came off the bone and had to be screwed back in (left knee), and a full rupture of the quad muscle off the tendon (right knee) which was repaired the same way as the video.

Just saw the one where they REALLY filmed a real patella tendon repair surgery. Should've watched this, bad decision.

I tear the patella of both legs in 2008 after landing on my knees messing around with a skateboard without knee protection. I've never gotten surgery, just plaster on my left knee for a few months. I still feel pain around that area, and my knees look weird, but i still go to the gym and train calisthenics. Do i still need surgery after 15 years?

im confused as to what i actually did to my knee. i fell of my bike at around 30mph and went over my handle bars i used my right arm to break my fall and i also hit my knee cap face down on the pavement too. when i got to the hospital they put my arm in cast but said my knee was not broken but badly damaged. for the first week i couldn't walk. i'm 8 weeks into my recovery and i can walk and run but cannot fully bend my knee i get really sharp pains in it, have i torn the ligaments ?

I’m 10 wks post op. I’m 120 degrees on my left. 112 degrees on my right. This thing is a big challenge. But you’ll be alright if you follow your rehab everyday. Can’t be lazy. Also I’m starting a series on my channel about my injury so join me
