What would you rather be doing than listening to another hour long video by AV talking about Joey Carbstrong?

Paul's gigantic ego talking about ego! How humble! I'm so done with their toxic "leadership".

The irony of "It's ego for you to think your opinion about outreach is correct -- you have to think that MY opinion about outreach is correct" is truly incredible.

YES YES YES to this!!! I personally like the AV model, but am not a fan of the leadership at all. You can add the other Gary (GLF) to that list of people on a pedestal as well... I also just made a video indirectly talking about AV and how I'm really sick of people in the movement who act like gate keepers to who is a "real activist" and tell you that there is only one "right way" to do activism. Anyway, you hit the nail on the head here!!

Just saw a segment from this on Roger Yates' channel. So grateful you sat through hours P and A so we don't have to. If anyone feels inspired to crack on with actual grassroots activism but isn't sure where to start, AJE interviewed Ronnie Lee yesterday and will be uploading a 3 parter on grassroots organising drawing on Ronnie's decades of organising experience. Starts Fri Oct 16.

I totally forgot about the spat. Here I am, leading my vegan life out in the Real World, totally unaware of what's happening at vegan soshmeed.[shrug] TFP!

The psychology being used by the AV leadership sounds a lot like what I'm seeing in that NXIVM cult documentary I'm watching. You must be disagreeing with me out of fear/ego, so if you want to grow, stop listening to yourself and start listening to me.

Honestly think this is the most important point anyone in your position could possibly make and something everyone in the AR community desperately needs to hear. "you don't need us to win."

mad respek.

Great video. That ego criticism was thrown at me when I critiqued AV and Saves. Now I understand why. But I didn't realise it was Meorge for the animals at the root of the funding debacle. Keep on dissenting :) otherwise known as thinking for ourselves.

Always well said Jake! Too bad there’s a few in my community that when I recently tagged them on your last video I got a nasty response back that went “ you’re discouraging activism”. I’m over my community. Can’t work with closed minded people that get aggressive and shut you down completely.

It's great to have role models, however, if you blindly agree with every single thing they say and do, that's really dangerous!

Hi, so I've been going through these since recently listening to Paul's workshops and feeling inspired to get involved in activism, it's important to me to get a full picture of the organization and leadership. I totally get that it's very important to not believe leaders are infallible and immune from valid criticism.

My impression so far: I don't think you give Paul enough credit for being an authority on best practices for outreach. He learned from Gary, who has had an unparalleled extensive knowledge about effective activism, and from countless hours in the field. It isn't that his style is authoritarian, it's that he's understandably frustrated and has little patience for people who don't recognize the role that experience and knowledge play in how he's directing the movement. That's similarly been a point of contention between him and many who have been using AV's name in their activism but aren't actually aligned with the organization's goals, style, ethics and mission. Similarly, as I commented on your more recent video, that AV is "Doing It Wrong" -- respectfully, and for reasons I mentioned there, I don't feel your thinking on activism is too developed or nuanced compared to his.

I also don't think you give him enough credit for what he's accomplished and how that's reflected by his leadership position. For example you complained basically that his podcast videos regarding the donor and Joey Carbstrong situation were too long. But if that's the format he's best able to deliver his side of the story in, I think you should give him due respect for the time that might require for anyone who's looking to get the full picture. And when he says he feels people who can't give that time to it aren't invested in the animal rights movement, I think he's more specifically speaking to people who judge AV on the basis of this dispute without having taken the time to actually listen to the leadership's side of the story.

But I'm continuing to watch your videos on this as I explore further! Thank you

So glad I found this channel! Thank you for saying what I would have been too afraid to say as a new vegan that's still trying to navigate the space. Honestly, Earthling Ed has always given me the cult leader vibe lol and oh boy I don't even want to imagine the attack I'd get if I say this to a random vegan.

I completely agree. The ONLY thing that matters is we remain open about our veganism and refuse to remain silent because of social pressure. Vegan activists are not a monolith, we are everyday people of all different backgrounds and skillsets. Carnists need to see us and our individualities coming together to #denormalizecarnism . We represent the future society that includes all types of people but agrees on one key point: animals are not to be used or abused. All non-violent activism is effective to someone somewhere.

Exactly! There is no instruction manual for how to be vegan, or to be an activist or an environmentalist or a decent human being. No one should be blindly followed without criticism. And we need to actually work together to make it through (and improve) this mess we call modern society.
