Three Minute Thursdays // Episode 91 // May 20, 2021

A new study has come out that reinforces what we have been told over and over again - that perhaps the approach used by groups like Anonymous for the Voiceless not only doesn't work, but is making things worse.

Plus, let's discuss the whole "you can't love animals but eat them too" philosophy while we're at it. Why not.

Had you never heard of veganism until one day you heard a speech or watched a video and became vegan overnight? Or was it a build of up ideas, thoughts and philosophies that led you to where you are now?

Come debate me on channel on this topic. I'd love to have you on. You can find my email on the about page of my channel and we can schedule a debate.

I think a rights-based ethical argument is not primarily intended to make people feel guilty (although that may be what happens). I think the intent is to present a rational argument that other animals are rights bearers, and our use of them are, therefore, rights violations.

Thanks for another thought provoking video Jake! I'm a relatively new vegan at just over 3 years, and I definitely dip my toes in the guilt tripping sort of stuff from time to time, and have definitely been trying to adjust and just lead by example. I also took a loooong time to make the switch and had many lightbulb moments. I made a new years resolution to go vegan by the end of 2018 and in March of that year I non-chalantly watched Dairy is Scary and went vegan immediately. But had I seen that video years before I probably would've dismissed it as propaganda. So recently I try to really remember what it was like before I went vegan and talk to folks in a way that would've been effective on me.

The guilt trip was definitely what made me go vegan and can 100% say I would never have made the change if it wasn't for AV/joey carbstrong etc being really outspoken and using harsh wording. It wasn't one video that made me change though it was a seed that got planted which over time lead to me going vegan.

This is why I believe giving people a guilt trip then letting them have a choice between vegan/no vegan foods didn't work, there wasn't enough time for people to process it.

Love, kindness and compassion made me go vegan. Seeing humanity for what it really is, is why I stay vegan.

Have you read “Motivational Methods for Vegan Advocacy” by Casey Taft? He doesn’t endorse shaming people, but expresses frustration with the approach people like Melanie Joy have taken.

Paul and Asal giving advice on morality is like asking Jimmy savile for tips on babysitting.

I’ve felt this way for so long, thank you for pushing toward a more data centered research backed approach to support the animal rights movement

I went vegan 3 years ago immediately after learning about the dairy industry, before that I had been a vegetarian for 6 years or so because I felt guilty about my actions, the only thing that made me change. With the absence of accountability, they would be preaching about plant based diets and animal welfare contrary to Veganism. Though, it is upto the person if they're willing to change for good, you can't do much regarding that, what you can do is not be an apologetic "Pick Me Vegan".

Your interpretation of this study and presentation of the research done regarding guilt as a driver of attitude and behavior change is lacking. It is not as black and white as you present it in this video: "Guilt does not work, according to study after study" is a gross misrepresentation of the research.

Sometimes, for some people, guilt is an effective tactic to convince people to make changes. Although perhaps it is not effective generally for the public, I don't know. Certainly for some people, perhaps the majority, it is not effective. The task is to choose the most fitting approach in outreach. That being said, a diversity of tactics is still a good thing.

Hi Cranky Vegan! Just found your channel and already smashed that subscribe button. It'd be great if you could link the studies you refer to in the video description so that we can read more about them.

Is it anything like someone trying to lose weight, feels guilty about eating junk, but finds excuses to continue eating them?

Have you reached out the AV, Paul or Asal in private about this? If so, what’d they say about it? Do you think we’ll be able to formalize a blanket approach to our veganism?

I take part in AV in France and New Mexico. Our groups strive to show what's happening and educate, not shame anyone, as we have to consider our audience and the cultural differences in our regions. Personally, I did need to see these images to go vegan. Action like this isn't enough of course, and we need to do more if we want to change the world for animals.
I'm also betting that the type of shaming they're using in these studies is quite different than what's going on in AV, so we probably need more info on that. Thanks as always for your perspective.

I'm new to your channel but have been following AV outreach for a while. You bring up great points. I think the cube of truths are making an impact but I think it's more due to showing people what goes on rather than trying to make them feel guilty about it. Also related, what do you think about the part where they're supposed to try to get people to commit on the spot? Effective?

Which study is that? Where can I read about it? So far in all AR activism I can only get results whenever I make non-vegans feel guilty though. I wonder if this is just your opinion and your dig at AV again.

It wasn't guilt that made me go vegan. It was righteous indignation after watching a couple of documentaries including earthlings. I didn't know any vegans. No person talked to me about it. I just did it on my own 8 years ago. Oh and thanks for making so much sense.
