Ageism, which can be described as stereotyping or discrimination based on a person’s age, is prevalent across our society. In the healthcare system, ageism can influence patients and providers. Dr. Allura Lothary will discuss the many ways ageism, healthcare, and technology intersect. This presentation will overview current research on experiences of ageism in healthcare settings, the impacts of ageism on patient health, and strategies to reduce ageism in healthcare. At the end of this presentation, audience members will be able to take-away information such as a) identifying how ageism impacts healthcare b) understanding how aging attitudes impact our own behaviors and c) problem-solving ways to identify and reduce experiences of ageism in healthcare settings. The audience is encouraged to think about and bring their own experiences to discuss.
