About time we got a successor to the AIM-54 Phoenix. Wonder if Raytheon used data and engineering from the BAE Meteor as a baseline? That missile was a good stopgap above the AMRAAM.

The AIM-174 sounds like a dual-use missile. You could use it against AWACS and ELINT aircraft, plus any SAM system with an AESA, Q, or X-band radar. You get AAM and ARM capabilities in one platform.

There is another great disadvantage of Chinese missiles that was not discussed...
Each missile is built in China.

About time the US starts seeing the supply-chain as a CRITICAL element as we used to! ITAR is more complicated and important that it has ever been! We are playing a very long series of 3D chess games here.

Chinese Military prowess is basically a big question mark. The reason for this is three fold. First all this equipment isn't battle tested. Second, Chinese doctrine isn't based in experience nor will be dynamic enough once they are involved in a war. Third, China's population with "one child" isn't thrilled in having their family lines killed off in a conflict.

China is probably closer to 1980s-2000s equivalent to US gear from that time. So China would probably bout up more of a challenge that Russia at this time but in a war where units have to stay out in the field for periods of time, Chinese forces will be combat ineffective sooner than US forces let alone China vs the US and its Allies.

China's military is really more for internal issues than for projecting power.

I hope the USAF adapts the F-15ex to carry this missile. They are developing their own long range missile which will be less expensive. The F-15ex could carry 6 of these and possibly 8. With F-35s ahead targeting, the combination would be formidable.
