There was a ton of poor corporate decision making involved in it too. This blaming online shopping has been used so much as a scape goat, and it's starting to show through, when people look at how malls in other countries with the same online shopping outlets are preforming.

Have you gone shopping at an American Mall recently?

I can have tons of money but whatever the buyers think people want is not what they want, it is rather ugly stuff that turns me off.

You are right on about American Malls having little or no public transportation. I visited one mall in Dallas that not only had no bus or rail access but the only way to enter the mall was via the car ramp into the parking garage. There was no pedestrian entrance at all. They assumed that if you couldn't afford a car that you were too poor to have as a customer. The other issue we had is monoploy. Simon malls which account for most of the malls in New Jersey is a prime example. Their company policy was that all of their malls had to have the exact same stores and food concessions. One very extremeltysucessful book store was forced out because the owner didn't want to open a book store in all of the Simon malls. Every mall was exactly the same selling the same stuff. There were no one off or unusual stores. The last thing about American malls is that there absolutely no stores of interest to men. There is never a hobby shop or hardware store (except Sears and they are gone). They didn't even have a sports bar where the men could hang out while their wives shopped. They also were always short on help since there never was any affordable housing anywhere near the mall and there was no reliable public transportation. (Usually the last bus leaves the mall before the stores close so there is no public transportation for the employess to take home.

SF made the news when Westfield quit its downtown mall (leaving it open for business). Nobody ever asked why we needed a mall downtown, or pointed out our other mall, Stonestown, out in the fog banks. Stonestown is thriving . For one thing it has no competition, it IS the down town for that part of the city; and it’s highly adaptable while downtown the fancy mall pretended it’s location made it immune to retail change. It never adapted and now it struggles
