In Brazil, malls are quite popular, as there is a high crime rate here and the mall is a safe place most of the time, so it is very common for people to go to the mall to meet, walk around, etc.

Malls in the Philippines are getting bigger, and more are being built. You are right in saying that location is ang important factor. Malls there can be accessed by foot (since they are near residential areas) or by public transport. Not so in the US. You have to drive and drive to get there. Likewise, malls there as you said have everything..food, entertainment, supermarkets, hardware stores, movies, even bowling alleys and concert halls. Not like in the US where its mostly clothes. With online shopping and many budget conscious people who prefer to shop elsewhere, most US malls will die if it keeps this kind mentality that they have back in the 80s and 90s. I for one don't even go to clothing stores when I go to malls, and if there is nothing else interesting, I leave. In the Philippines however, malls (some of which can be 4, 5, or 6 floors) have such a variety of stores that you can stay there all day.

As a turk living in ankara, malls are a great convenience for the middle class, its simply better for someone to jump on the metro for 0.28 € travel with ac, and get to shop carfree.

Your analysis is right on the money...I used to live in Europe and have traveled extensively throughout Asia and yes I can confirm what you're saying here...thanks for sharing...

They’re dying in the UK too and have been following the US trend almost exactly.

In greece there are so many people going to the mall that when you want to buy something, especially now with the covid measures, you will have to wait in lines. Even when the stores are closed, there are still people in the mall and when a store closes permanently, a new one pops up pretty quickly

Not accurate at all. Many malls in dense cities are failing too. The 2 main malls in San Francisco are both failing. Both are connected to many public transit lines (bus, cable car, subway, light rail, etc…). Many of them are also multi use and are still failing.

Nah bruh. Online shopping in the US is bigger than in Europe. American kids these days don't spend time at the mall, whereas kids in the past used to despite not having cars to get there. Even if US malls became public transport friendly, there wouldn't be any appreciable increase in foot traffic because few people are willing to put up with the kind of wildlife found on public transit these days. To say the lack of different types of services has killed off malls is also wrong. I've never known a mall to only feature high end clothing stores, but a vast assortment of services up to and including mini public library.

Finally to say that most malls were built in the 70's as a partial reason for their dilapidated state, aren't public transit friendly, and have always had a lack of store variety are key reasons for their death but somehow succeeded during the 70's-00's sounds like you're trying to have it both ways. What was different in the 70's-00's versus today? As you contend malls today still lack the diverse array of stores as they did back then. They're still not public transit friendly as they weren't back in the 70's-00's. What could have changed? Here's a hint: 🖥💻📱

I remember you could go and hang out at a mall. Meet up with friends eat hang out play arcade games go to the movies and during Christmas ice skate the mall had everything and the cost of things were high . As time went in shops closed and then you could not hang out movie theaters closed the roller and ice skating rinks closed food courts and little by little everything went high were you could not afford anything all you could do was window shop then the police started to kick people out if you were in groups so we're do you go for fun. You could no longer hang out with a group of friends with out being lable a gang are a disruptive group so yes they lost out the more money a item cost the more hours you had to work and malls ware were most teen kids got jobs part time for the summer holidays a few days out of the week or month to buy things and learn responsibility. It's all gone with today's cost
