Naval ideas are actually really good because its the only way to get naval combat bonuses outside of traditions.

Honestly I love Maritime's bonuses, you underestimate how much money you can make from having all those extra light ships to protect trade as a trade focused nation. Of course, I would only take it really late in singleplayer if I'm roleplaying a trade nation (all of my games lol)

if the recent dev diary is to be believed, Econ is about to be the worst idea group. All the best stuff (dev cost, construction cost/time, monthly autonomy) is being moved to the new Infrastructure Ideas, and replaced w/ inflation/interest reduction and goods produced. That last one is solid, but doesn't make up for the rest of the weak sauce ideas left in Econ. With all the other admin groups being so strong, it'll be extremely hard to justify the opportunity cost of ever picking Econ.

I don't agree with you. The court ideas now are the worst right now. Maritime provides naval and marines force limit, tons of sailors. You can take naval hegemony before 1550 and get 200% sailors increase, literaly infinite amount of infantry

Thing is, it’s not the naval ideas that suck. It is the navies themselves, it is the force limit, it is the bigger wins mechanic, it is the fact that they literally can not harm your enemy at all. You can’t kill the French economy by blockading them, it does literally nothing.

The final idea makes the entire rest of the group worth it tbh, it makes Naval micro SO much easier!

Maritime is one of the best, especially for smaller colonizers like Holland. You get +50% NFlimit combined with the +33% NFl Policy you almost get double the ships, which you can use for trade as well as combat. The Marine force limit is also great for midgame. Repairing in Seatiles is obviously great as well. I would go for something like Innovative for worst group, as you miss out on important early game groups, since for european nations it doesn't really matter, while for non european nations, the idea slots just are too valuable early on. Naval has some use but let me ask you what is better: +88% Navy or like a 20% increase on its effectiveness, so for me it's always an optional addon to maritime

Naval and Maritime would matter more if navies were not optional for most nations.

I think I rate Naval worse than Maritime. Maritime gives you some economic bonuses and marines; Naval gives free coastal barrages and marines.

Fun fact:
Both naval and maritime ideas are banned in most mp lobbies cause of how much op they are, yea you read that right they are op, because it forces other players to pick them too if they want a chance of beating your navy

I would say as a trade nation like if you wanna control the entire worlds trade maritime is not bad because the force limit lets you jsut spam hundreds and hundreds of ships.

I took it once in Japan, in a random new world... The north sea was an open shot to Iceland, and then I contested the British navy and started invading Europe..

Repairing in sea tiles also counteracts naval batteries. I had a friend who always built those to counter naval trolling in MP, but after i took maritime he gave up and we had to ban the practice.

I played a custom corsica game and it was pretty helpful to just have so many strong ships when you're fighting against way too many naval powers at once. (Castille, Aragon, Tunis, Florence, Naples and Savoy)

Naval ideas are way worse, at the very least maritime gives you confirm thalloscracy, repair, and a huge naval force limit.
