A counter and 3 sequences programmed in the loop() function, who chooses which one to use according to a value set by reading the input pins where the buttons are wired... I think I can teach my 8 yo kid to do it. The resistance are necessary to limit the current in the LEDs (LEDs offer no resistance, just a voltage small gap). I did something quite similar, but the 8 simple monochrome LEDs are replaced by 125 RGB LEDS shaped as a cube, I use a much smaller micro-controller than an Arduino (ESP32), it's connected by Wifi and I can trigger which sequence to use by talking to a Google Home smart speaker. The hardest part was to solder the 500 pins of the LEDs (4 per RGB LED) on the PCBs.
