The federal reserve bank has found itself as the center of attention in recent months, what with everything from, money printer Meme's to “the future of capitalism as we know” on the line, the fed has obviously been an incredibly influential entity.

But it’s also something that most people really don’t know much about, or worse… think they know a lot about when they really don’t.

But that’s ok because the federal reserve bank is a bank, so the best way to get to really get a good understanding of how it works is just to follow the money and answer a simple question, Is the reserve bank profitable?

Now because I hate YouTube video’s than needlessly drag out a question to get their average watch time up the short answer is.. Yes, Massively Profitable, it’s actually the most profitable organization in the world after recently beating out Saudi Aramco.

But don’t click away yet… For starters I need that average watch time too, but more importantly, finding out how money works to generate massive profits at the federal reserve bank will teach you a lot about how this almost mythical institution actually operates day to day.

The federal reserve carefully purchase government bonds and mortgage back securities. I miss those days when this was true because now they also purchase "junk bonds" make that make sense

Basically, every "profit" they made is every dollar they "sucked" out from the financial system. It is a means of controlling money supply as opposed to capturing market power (the profit as we know).

This is a great introduction to the Federal Reserve.

I would, however, like to point out that not ALL banks own shares of Federal Reserve Bank stock.

Specifically, only "Nationally-Chartered banks (Those under the supervision of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency) and state-chartered banks which choose to and qualify for membership in the Federal Reserve System are required to purchase Federal Reserve Bank stock.

There are many "state-chartered" non-member banks which ARE NOT required to be members of the Federal Reserve System. However, these banks "clear" their transactions thorough "correspondent" banks. Those "correspondent" banks, by their very nature of providing clearing services, ARE required to be members of the Federal Reserve System and own Federal Reserve Bank Stock.

Not trying to "split hairs, " but that is the general regulatory structure.

This might be a dumb question that I'm just misunderstanding, but if every newly-formed loan-issuing bank needs to be a 6% shareholder in the Fed, wouldn't that mean only 16-17 banks could exist? And there are way more. Unless that means each newly-formed bank must take 6% of the money raised from their shareholders and invest that in the Fed.
