Thailand is going CASHLESS - BUT There is a real PROBLEM!

It has been announced that Thailand will become a cashless society. I like the idea of Thailand going cashless, but how will places like Bangkok adapt to the new system? I have concerns for tourists visiting Thailand as well as expats looking to live in Thailand too.

Cash guarantees your freedom, anonymity and privacy. Cash should never disappear. As soon as cash disappears, your digital cage snaps shut. So don't speak positively about this development that is taking place worldwide.

I don’t understand why people don’t see the danger in al this. They want to control us and by going cashless they can. CASH IS KING MATE.

Why anyone would want a bank or government (cbdc) in 100% charge of your money, there should always be a cash option

All about control. Cashless = End of freedom

Cash is king, if Thailand goes cashless, I simply will not visit.

I don’t want anybody knowing my spending habits. I don’t sign up for memberships at 7/11 or Lotus. Only one place that does not accept cash and I’ve only been there once, won’t go back.

Great to see in the comments that a lot of people are wide awake👀

What about when your phone goes dead?? Or you drop an break it?? or it gets stolen??
Cashless is going to be an absolute fucking NIGHTMARE!!!
But hey, as long as the government is able to TRACK and SNOOP on every single transaction we make, then I'm sure they'll go ahead with it REGARDLESS of what the PEOPLE WANT!!

I work in an exotic car dealer in Bangkok, we had a Chinese client buy a 16m baht car the other day, van door opened up, 2 men with briefcases - all cash. We were prepared with 2 cash counters in the office. I doubt cash in Thailand will be ended 😊

I need a cash society to retire in. Don't like the cashless places here and avoid them. Escape tyranny tip toe to go to tyranny tip toe. Not a huge decision for me. Thanks for the heads up.

How will the bribes be paid? I can guarantee that brown paper bags will forever be a staple in Thailand! 😂

Once cashless, the mom and pop small businesses will be taxed. So many freedoms will cease.

Sounds like garbage to me (Shanghai is already like this) - when apps and QR codes don't work or get compromised on a big scale, the whole system will shut down. People don't realise the massive mess that is looming!

Interesting to note that the report that is saying they will be cashless by 2028 is written by VISA...who has a vested interest in making everything cashless so they can charge more fees!!!!

"Visa, a leading global digital payment service provider, recently conducted the Consumer Payment Attitude Study and found that Thailand could become a cashless society by 2028"

Paying by card is a convenient option to have, but the idea of making it the ONLY option is terrifying. Every bit of spending tracked by the government, and they'll also have the ability to control what you can and can't buy, or even switch off access to your money.
And what if your phone battery is dead, or your device is lost or stolen, or left at home?
And as you briefly referred to, what about all the street food vendors who simply carry a basket of food around to sell? Or the thousands of market stalls, food vans and roadside sellers? Or individuals buying/selling second hand goods? How can these people possibly transact?

A cashless system is an absolute nightmare scenario. By all means allow electronic payments, but cash has to stay.

As a tourist, I wanted to buy some donuts in a Silom mall, but couldn't, as they don't take cash. I don't even know if my debit card could have paid for them, it was locked away in my hotel safe.

I think there would be a lot of tax implications as well. There is a whole lot of cash that is being earned and not reported right now. Cashless means tracking. Tracking means the government. Government means taxes.
