Taking cash to Thailand is the best option. You will get the best rates for your hard earned cash. But if you don't take clean notes, you may have a Big problem in Thailand. ATM machines are ok for emergency, but charge you every time to use them?
Hope this Tip helps to save to time, and money.
Have a great time in Thailand.
Cheers Geoff

If one place refuses to change a note because of a little tear or something, try taking your money to another place. I can't say this works every time, but one time I was in Bangkok, changing my money at a Super Rich, and the refused one of my £50 notes because tiny bit of one corner had been clipped off, only about 2mm but they wouldn't take it. So I took my money back and went somewhere else, I was going to MBK Centre and I found another Super Rich there and they exchanged my money, including the damaged note, without any problems. So if you have this problem, it might be worth trying somewhere else, you might get lucky like I did.

I gave a money changer a pay back. He gave me a 1000 thai baht note with writing on it and I made him change it. Two can play at the game.

Great video, for Americans take the newest "big head" notes, Thai exchanges won't take the older notes with the small heads, particularly the old $100 notes. 10-15 years ago I'd have advised taking travellers checks, but today they're getting harder to find and fewer places will exchange them. Best bet is an ATM card that kicks back the ridiculous Thai ATM fees. Fidelity Cash Management accounts offer one. I took one last trip using the ATM every day, and saved $250 in fees over a couple months.

Absolutely correct! Even slightly folded money can be refused! Always go to the bank and get brand new bills, don’t fold them, keep them in an envelope etc Otherwise your going to Thailand with less money than you think
Good tip Geoff

I've been to Thailand four times now and have never had a problem, maybe I was lucky and all my notes were clean, but I will be more aware now. I never realised they were this fussy so thank you for the info Geoff.

Hi Geoff, I first encountered this problem changing bank notes with writing on 3-4 yrs ago in Pattaya, fortunately most of my notes were ok but I seem to remember I went to one of the banks and they changed them without a problem with your ID it was the kiosks where their was a problem, so now it’s clean money only, the last thing you want a problem with is your money, cheers Geoff

To be fair there’s an exchange place every 2 minutes in pattaya. One of them will change your money

Awright Geoff, don't know if you noticed but the 3rd note you showed us that you said was alright was actually marked aswell, so you only had £40 in good notes. Just a small observation, but I'm glad you mentioned it pal. Cheers Geoff

Great video, Geoff. Same same in the other countries around SE Asia, too. With US currency, even if the bills are in great condition, if they are older than 1996, no one will take those either! I had a $100 US bill and it was older and couldn't exchange it anywhere. For anyone in the US, and maybe they have these in the UK and other places around the world, but Charles Schwab refunds ALL ATM charges as long as it has a Visa logo on it. They don't have physical banks because they are an Investment/Brokerage firm, but you can have a checking account with them and get a debit card for the checking account. I have a retirement account with them, and so I only use their debit cards when traveling. One month last year in Thailand I was charged about $80+ USD from Thai banks for ATM charges, and was reimbursed all of it. I hope this might help other travelers out if they didn't already know this. Good day, mate! Have a great one!

I was with knobby when this happen to him.
Cashier wouldn't take his torn or marked notes, when he got his Thai notes and they had rips and marks on them he refused them and made her give him perfect notes. This pissed her off big time 555 and she lost face.

Take £50 notes, you get a slightly better exchange rate. I always change cash at Vasu currency exchange near Nana sky train or Superrich.
