Hello I am 52 years old and I live in Greece. My biggest fear was even just the thought of being underwater. I was claustrophobic and never put my head underwater. 1 day I thought nooo wayyy, I cant live in Greece and not enjoy the sea..but what about my fear for the water ?? so I thought I need to overcome my fears and the way I thought best is SCUBA DIVING LESSONS . I was very lucky to have my discovery dive at a great diving school and my instructor was excellent. He was very patient with me and explained everything over and over again. I am completing the open water training next week and am proud to say that I managed to do all the exercises and guess what ... I am not claustrophobic anymore. A serious diving school and properly trained instructors helped me overcome my fears and be able to enjoy a new world underwater. Next goal a trip to Thailand or Bali and diving to see corals Regardless age and fears we can do anything we put our mind to !!!

My tip before taking a scuba course is being comfortable in the water. This helped me a lot. You don't necessarily need to be a great swimmer for the basic certification. Also, take your time in your movements. There is no point to rush anything. Also, if you CANNOT find your primary regulator after two tries, just grab, insert, clear and breath through you secondary regulator.

I got teary eyed bc of this video. A newbie diver here and I can 100% follow instructions but having a hard time on mental discipline. So this is of great help. Thank you!

When i first did my open water course, i watched the videos the week before doing it. And i told my instructor when we started, i wasnt sure if i could do the mask removal skill, because it looked so hard in the video. So after every single skill we did, she said ok lets do the mask removal again. So by the end of the pool portion I had done the mask removal like 15-20 times. And i mastered it that day. And now that im an insturctor i do that with ny students that are afraid of the mask removal 🙂

Taking that first dive I get so anxious. Then I relax go back to my happy place. You are instrumental in changing peoples lives.

yes, those are those fears of the beginners. I know it by my self. It is so important to have a patient and experienced diving instructor. very good video!

The hardest skill for me was taking my mask off underwater and putting back on but my instructor worked with me after that, I was certified. The only thing I regret about learning how to dive is I didn't do it sooner.

I’m not a diver yet, but I’m so ready to learn. I snorkeled in the Bahamas about 20 years ago, and the initial breathing was weird at first, as I learned to trust the snorkel and learn to swim with it and breathe with it, but once I did it was much fun. Right then and there I knew I had to learn to scuba dive. Fast forward years due to “life” and me and my son I think will do it. I’m trying to get him off his iPad and show him all the cool and wonderful stuff there is to do outdoors.

I’m prepping to get my PADI because I’m going on a volunteer marine conservation trip, and while I’m so excited I am an anxious person especially sometimes in the water. Thank you so much for this video it made me feel so much better and excited about getting my PADI and knowing that I’m not the only one feeling these fears and that everyone goes through this. Thank you

wow. I wish I watched this 48 hours ago. I went to do my first pool session for the open water certificate yesterday and literally the first two fears really affected me. Being asthmatic on top of it contributed to me panicking which led to me being short of breath and having to call the session short. Luckily the dive centre I was at was very comprehensive and did not pressure me at all and offered to reschedule once I felt more comfortable. Will definitely try to practice this skill with a snorkel before going back again. I really want to get a grasp of it so I can start diving :)
PS: I really liked your overall demeanor

Thanks for this video. I have been out of the water for close to 10 years. I am doing a dive on Thursday. Even though I had reached the level of dive master, I cannot find my confidence. To add to that, I am 68 years. You helped me remember all the fears I had when I took my first open water class. Fears that I am confident that I can deal. On to the next fear--Bouyancy.

Thank you, you calmed me a little this morning. Today is the last day of my owd course. I’m learning diving in a lake and yesterday we were at 12m and you couldn’t see anything just black . I was scared but really happy I didn’t lost my buddy . But after that I kind of freaked out a little and felt like i couldn’t get enough air . My instructor later told me not to worry about that . I did really good the other times and already mastered the mask skill and the regulator skill. But after this experience yesterday I’m kind of nervous to go down today . Wish me luck 🍀☺️

Thanks for the video .
I Just passed my open water
Had no problem clearing my mask
Just taking it off it felt back to front . When I put my mask back on water on the inside air on outside if that makes sense .
It’s was on a second dive so maybe a bit dehydrated. Only thing I Had a moment on But got it in the end and will retry for myself confident in not so deep water or a pool .

Great video, I'm a new diver, just got open water certified in Sept. I wish I would've seen this video first. I subscribed and look forward to watching more. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

Great video! I just did my first open water today however the visibility was horrible. We were at a depth of around 24 ft when I tried inflating my bc and I guess I did too much that I began to ascend quickly but because of my vertigo mixed with horrible visibility I felt as if we were in a whirlpool and felt so dizzy, when we surfaced I thought we were just in a storm of some sort but it was just because I accidentally inflated my bc and ascended quickly

Mask clearing is my hardest skill :, ) and I thought I was the only abnormal one cos everyone could do it with ease. I had a panic Attack when I couldn’t clear my mask and water went up my nose and I suddenly couldn’t breathe (nth to do with regulator i still had air source but just panic mode)

I got a Low volume mask now and I’m trying to practice it very often now but I’m just so uncomfortable with water being in my mask and being okay with water surrounding my eyes and going into my nose

I want to thank you for making me feel less scared. I have done 2 confined water dives and have done the mask clearing/removal/swim without mask skills and it was so SO scary. I got water up my nose and had to plug my nose the whole time. I got it done and was able to accomplish them all but it took more than once. I found that plugging my nose helped me to calm down and breath through the regulator easier because unfortunately I can't seem to figure out that I can breath through my mouth without my nose lol. While I hope I never have to do this skill again or have it happen by accident, I really hope I can be calm enough to finish it again.
