Zinc carbon cells can be charged by PCR method, but not in this circuit. 25 years back, I charged 4 cells (D-type) with PCR method. No heating up. But I encountered one problem - the cells are charging in up to 2V. I did not know how to control it and I abandoned the effort. (I am not an electronics engineer)
