I bought a Chinese Elm from my nursery today. I have learned that the seeds and leaves are edible and that they coppice or pollard well. This means that you can grow it as a fodder crop for your livestock, and I am going to plant mine next to my chicken pen, so that the hens can have shade and also eat all those lovely seeds!

Also, a grape vine planted by an elm tree will never get blight! The elm can be pollarded to a workable size and will form a trellis structure for the grape, if pruned correctly (branches trained horizontally).

And yes, I did buy a grape vine as well...

I'm in Minnesota and I found a yard full of what looks like a elm dwarf hybrid that's growing like crazy hundreds and hundreds of them. The leaves look just like the elm leaves of but they're much smaller. She asked if I could poison all of them. There is no trunk but about it shoots reaching the height of about 6 to 7 ft. A huge gnarly root. Growing into the chain link fence and into the neighbor's yard is spreading everywhere.
Cutting the road was terrible it has a thick Sapp. I had to drill holes into the root and pour in poison
