The time Apple lost $708M in 3 months

Apple might be the archetype of a rags-to-riches story. From hand-made computers to iPhones and iPods, Apple seems to have done it all.

In 2018, it became the first trillion-dollar company, and along the way, it has reached cult-like status. With each new release, people flock to the stores to be the first with the latest iPhone and be a part of the brand. But the story is much more than just technology.

There are enough Apple stories to fill books, feature films, and Youtube channels, but this is Company Forensics, and today we are going to talk about that time when Apple almost went out of business.

We are SOOO excited about this video: we've been working on it for about 3 months and it's by far our best Company Forensics episode yet.
In our (usual) spirit of transparency, the production cost for this was about $10, 000 and it was an opportunity for us to collaborate with good friends that I had been dying to work with.

The story of Apple is an inspiration for many of us entrepreneurs, and we felt that it had to be told in the best possible way.
This video is also an experiment as to what our Youtube channel can become: what if we drastically pivot the production quality of our videos? Can Slidebean Media become a thing of its own?

We'll find out Tuesday!

The editing, the narration and everything with this video is on a whole new level. Good job Slidebean.

While visually stunning, this video made a marked departure from the typical company forensics series. The video is supposed to be about Microsoft saving Apple, yet Microsoft is mentioned for only about a minute of this video and has very little on specifics. Most of the video comes off as a history of Apple, something the introduction said it was going to avoid.

Video was good but the title is misleading - you brushed passed the Microsoft part

Can't wait to see what do we have here... You owe me a cup of coffee due to the curiosity I'm in now or just publish the video right now

I really like how the footages were edited. Others wouldn't spend time on these things but yours really stand out because of how they were edited.

Good job!

Loved this story. I remember reading it years ago so it was great to get a refresher on it here.

3:16 this is actually a bit more complicated than apple needing help, they got that money not because of the Monopoly accusations or because apple was failing or even because Microsoft wanted to expand IE. they got that money due to a settlement over Microsoft plagiarising code from QuickTime in Windows Media player

Microsoft didn’t rescue Apple. ARM and Adobe did. Settlement with the Microsoft stopped only expensive court case and settled the dispute between the two companies.

"How Microsoft saved Apple from Bankruptcy"
** makes a 15 minute video and only dedicates 30 seconds to how Microsoft saved Apple from Bankruptcy **

Sorry, but this isn't really a video about how Microsoft saved Apple from Bankruptcy. It just feels like a fanboi salute to the history of Apple. Also during the nanonseconds that you actually mentioned Microsoft, you totally forgot to mention their commitment to release MS Office on Mac for the next five years, which was an important motivator for Bill Gates to help Apple (all Macs would ship with Microsoft Office for the next five years).

Anyway, I'll continue to watch your videos, but this one completely missed the mark IMHO.

There's a time back I had written an article about targeting your competitors' limitation -- not their weaknesses -- in order to be competitive in the market. I hadn't thought of Apple at the time, but it definitely fits in with that article: Apple focused on closed architecture, a clear limitation (something that the competitors cannot do even if they wanted to) of the existing competitors.
