Hi Madison! I watched your video today! Lots of good points there! I had some problems with studying back then (especially counting hours). Good video Madison! 👏💚

Really like your conclusion. Sometimes I don't know when to take a break and exhaust my will power let's say so much that at the end, I started to hate what I enjoy. The miracle of a break is that it makes me miss the me who was programming.

I had a similar issue after ending my first year of grad school. I worked through the summer doing data journalism and was so tired from the semester. Right before the semester started this year I just got hit like a bus by dread of going back to the grindstone. Ended up taking my free week and binging old video games with friends. Now I'm back to grinding and bringing up prime streams whenever I'm away from studying.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Burnout after attempting to go 10x could be a sign you're ready to move to mgmt position. I'm that manager that wanted to code, but was thrust into mgmt. position. Now I want to code, but too afraid of the grind - always watching vids about coding but not coding myself.
On the topic of coding vids, could try Cherno and ChiliTomatoNoodle if Prime takes fancy.

You're right because I find I can put in way more hours if it's a project I am interested in vs. someone's idea.

I.e. I am interested in a calculator for Financial Independence Retire Early/Compound Interest vs. an image recognizer.

I agree with your conclusions. Studying can quickly become a chore if you're not passionate about the subject you're learning. A way around this that has worked for me is to just tell myself, "Alright, learn something new today about topic X." That's it. It's like compound interest. Over time, you'll end up having spent thousands of hours learning about it.

When you're more engaged and invested in what you're doing, you're more apt to keep going. Forcing yourself to study or do X thing is noble in theory, but you want long lasting, mind shifting experiences. Sitting for 10 hours because you should won't provide that! I agree with what you're saying Madison :)

I completely agree.
I came to the conclusion that "enthusiam" is usually a much better incentive than "pressure".

Forcing yourself to study for hours is usually only successful when it is unavoidable, like when a medical student trying to pass all tests. However, it is always miserable, specially when unavoidable.
Self-learning doesn´t have the same kind of synthetic pressure that allows for these tatics.

Once we realize that, it becomes clear that it is completely wrong to compare self-learning tatics to "under-pressure" tatics. Because it may look like 10 hours of study per day is productive for those under pressure, but their purpose is only to solve their pressure. After the test is passed, little is retained or at least little is appreciated (appreciation for what is learned is more important than it looks).

Conclusion: the self-learner 5 hours per week study has better retention and appreciation than the 50 hours per week from the "under-pressure" learner.
Based on that, I sincerely believe that you are closer to being an 10X developer than most people that most people that study for hours and hours.

Based on your insights, I think the next steps for me is to nurture my enthusiam until I study more and more per week, but one step at a time. This thing about "going slow" is not only valuable to bootstrap learning, but to keep improving it continuously. Thanks a lot!

You should make a 10 hour course about how to study 10 hours a day to become a 10x engineer.
