Funny you say it’s anti Catholic. I’m not religious or Catholic and I watched it and actually thought it was a really beautiful telling of a story, where people are human with human emotions and desires while trying to represent what they are believing in. Top marks and it’s NOT anti Catholic at all!

I think the film is critical of people who would do things for earthly power. The director has called it a political drama. It also points out the humanity & fallen state of even cardinals of the church. The church is believers, not buildings nor administrative/power structures.

What did you perceive as so anti-catholic in the movie? It's a drama of personal ambitions, not a realistic depiction of a conclave. Popes are not elected based on one minute speeches but on based on their past actions and accomplishments and how these actions fit into the future vision of the church that the cardinals have discussed with each other.

I think it’s actually sad that lots of Catholics perceive any legitimate commentary on the catholic church as “anti-catholic”. I didn’t perceive it as anti-catholic at all, but more so pointing out power and corruption as well as hope for the future - just like Benitez said. I think you missed the point of the movie.

It’s NOT Anti-catholic. All it does is offer a modern surrealism to the inner workings of the Roman Catholic Church. Beautifully done if you ask me.

I read the book. I don’t think it was disrespectful at all. In fact, it portrays some of its characters as being a lot more sincere than I previously thought. As for the ending, I loved it. And not because I’m woke. It was because the new pope was finally as he should always have been. He is a compassionate, insightful, wise man who can shepherd his charges and finds fulfillment and joy in his work. What more can you ask for? There is a subtle undertone of women in the church erasing themselves in the book and it takes the main character a long time (75 years) to really understand it.
Go read the book. You won’t be disappointed.

I'm not a Christian of any sort but i cannot agree that the film is anti-catholic at all. I'd really appreciate a response detailing what you felt was disparaging towards catholics. Thanks.

How does it attack your faith?

It points out the church attracts people who seek power. It also points out that some of them are intolerant and not very nice. Which is provably true.

Getting upset is a self goal as the only thing you really manage to do is to confirm stereotypes.

You really can’t consider yourself a film critic if you’re going to insert your wounded feelings about your frail faith into your narrative. Honestly, you think that there isn’t ABUNDANT material evidence against the church, led EXCLUSIVELY by corrupt men?
Film makers only reflect back the glaring flaws - it isn’t a stretch, Dude.

I love how all of the atheists in the comments claim it is not anti-Catholic.

What a surprise!

As a catholic you are biased...it was a good movie...though the climax was a little bit of a let down

Honest question….is your faith “the Catholic Church”? Or is your faith the path of Jesus?

Excellent book and movie. My respect for the Roman Church has increased several fold: yes, it’s made up of imperfect human beings but it is a powerful spiritual force in today’s world.

I knew nothing abt the book or movie, but I knew it must be some woke/p.c./leftist reason why Hollywd nominated it for academy award. I'm an ex-catholic, but I just saw Megan Kelley's & Ben Shapiro's takes on it, too, so I won't waste my time & $ on watching it.

I have been waiting for somebody to mention how outrageous the end of the movie was. I won’t give any spoilers, but to those who have seen it I am not against any type of person and how they’re born… It’s just that the ending was suddenly thrown at us. Kind of like someone suddenly grabbing a book and throwing it at your head. It had nothing to do with anything. Another reviewer seemed to mention that maybe the ending was more fleshed out in the book. Maybe it would’ve made more sense with a little more added to it. But it’s like the ending had nothing to do with anything.

They literally made a movie about four or five people where they fleshed out their probability of trying to become pope, and again without any spoilers, when they present the answer at the end, instead of being any of the characters that the movie was about it turns out to be the Purple bunny rabbit from the alien planet Malartus.
