U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, who is the Democratic nominee for president, delivered forceful speeches at the 2024 Phoenix Awards dinner in Washington, D.C. on Saturday (September 14) night, emphasising the importance of protecting democracy and civil rights in the run-up to the 2024 election.

The event, hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF), brought together politicians, activists, and cultural leaders to celebrate Black excellence and reinforce the urgency of safeguarding democratic institutions.

Biden highlighted the stakes of the upcoming election, warning, "they're all ghosts in new garment trying to seize your power and extremists coming for your freedom"

Harris, a former member of the Congressional Black Caucus, focused on the importance of continued advocacy for civil rights. “While we moved and fight to move our nation forward toward a brighter future, Donald Trump and his extremist allies intend to take our nation backward” she said.

The evening also honoured notable figures including White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, and cultural icons LL Cool J and MC Lyte, celebrating their contributions to the Black community and broader society.
