Never bought into kylo's story, it sounds originally he would've had a better backstory which would have been cool. But I hated this whole trilogy regardless but I did like that lightsaber 🤔 it's pretty clean.

That makes sense since a normal cross gaurd like that can't be used well when the inner corners aren't lightsabery. You could cut through like a normal handle.

I like the theory that it wasn't his overwhelming hatred that cracked the crystal, but that he was too inexperienced in the dark side due to not having a proper teacher that caused his kyber crystal to break

Because its an unstable crystal, there are ''pure'' crystals that emits the normal and clear laser beam that we know and then there are the unstable crystals that are flawed or even cracked and thus gives thhis unstable wave effect.
