I’m looking to replace a colonial volute with a nice square post. The current turned post and balusters (6 of them!) are installed into the bottom tread and would need to have the holes patched/filled. If I wanted to do exactly the kind of install you demonstrate in this video, would I need to do anything to reinforce the bottom tread to support the new post? It is a typical stair tread strong enough to support the mount?

What are the measurements of the metal plate? I know this product is used for 3"-3 1/2" newel posts, but the plate dimensions are not listed anywhere.
