505 used to sit in harbor. There is an incredible video at the exhibit showing how they moved U-505 to its permanent location inside the museum. A definite must see. The museum of science and industry, as well as the Field museum and the great lakes museum ate all worth the trip across the pond.

I saw U505 in high-school before I ever really had a huge interest in warfare history and it was still a great experience. Just standing in the room looking at it it gave me chills. Very much worth a visit on its own but the Museum of Industry and Science was my favorite thing I did in Chicago overall. Spent a whole day just exploring in there and most of my memories of the trip are from that day.

When I was a teen my dad and I flew to Chicago for the day for lunch and to do a couple of touristy things. My dad wanted to see the U-505. I remember being so tired that day since we took a red eye and I couldn’t sleep on the flight. I do remember the U-boat though!

Totally worth the visit.

I lived in Chicago for 10 years without realizing and then one day I turned a corner in the Museum of Industry and Science and there was THE ENTIRE SUBMARINE just sitting there, indoors.

Super cool exhibit about how much havoc the U-Boats caused on Allied shipping and the extreme pains they took to capture one.

I THINK that’s how the allies got their hands on the enigma encoding machine

U-864 lies on the ocean floor off the coast of Norway; it was carrying special materials and personnel from Germany to Japan, including ca. 67 tons of quicksilver. Approx. 4 kg of this metal leaks from the sub each year, and there is constant planning regarding if it should be raised, or covered in sand to contain it.

As a kid our school would do a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry most years. I loved the U-505 and going down into the mine. Great museum.

In Finland there's also submarine Vesikko in Helsinki at the Suomenlinna sea fortress, which is a type IIA U-boat prototype and therefore technically the only surviving type II U-boat in the world.

If you have the time, look up the story on how U-505 was acquired. Absolutely bonkers.

I‘ve been on the U-Boat Wilhelm Bauer in Bremerhaven. It’s worth a visit (the entire maritime museum in Bremerhaven is worth a visit)!

Admiral Daniel V Gallery's ship was the one that captured U-505.
He wrote a lot of hilarious books about navy life----I highly recommend them if you can find them.

In Tallinn, Estonia there is ‘Lembit’ in Lennusadam which was an Estonian navy submarine in 1930s, her sister ‘Kalev’ disappeared with all of it’s crew, but ‘Lembit’ can be visited including the full interior

Can confirm, well worth visiting. Can see it from every angle and it's safe from the elements. Excellent exhibit.

If you visit U-505 in Chicago, you should read Steel Boat, Iron Hearts: A U-boat Crewman's Life Aboard U-505 by Hans Goebeler. He served on nearly every patrol on her, including the the last where she was captured, being the last one out of the U-Boat.

He talks about one of the Captains taking his own life while being depth charged and that same captain asking for Coffee one night, getting it delivered to him, only for the captain to pour it down on him while going down the ladder saying it was too hot.

There is also a U -995 at the museum at Laboe out in the open near Kiel. The forerunner / prototype of the WW2 U boats at the naval fortress in Helsinki as well.

My great great uncle was a german submariner in ww2. His U-boat got blown up by british depth charges in the strait of gibraltar. But, since the strait isn't very deep, he managed to swim about 50 meters up to the surface using an oxygen mask submariners were issued.
He got into british custody and was sent to a POW camp in northern africa.
However back in Gemany, all they heard was that his U-boat got blown up. So everyone assumend he died.
You can imagine the shock when he walked in to his family home a couple of years later 😅
