Easy Way To Enlarge Drilled Hole

How to enlarge a drilled hole to a bigger size.
Use a step bit to make a hole bigger and keep the bit centered.
Step bits are great to have a round the shop, anyway, so get a set and you'll have them handy for when you need to do this.

As simple as this tip is, it was exactly what I needed to hear. Sometimes we'll invent a new mousetrap rather than just doing something the easy way. You should've seen what I was doing yesterday in order to get exactly this result! Thanks.

Your idea works great. I did have another idea and wondered about how well it would work. Take a scrap piece and drill the size hole you want with the spade bit. Then, tightly clamp that piece over the object hole you want to enlarge making sure it's centered. Would the scrap piece guide you perfectly through?

Great tip - I even have all the stuff (I use the step bits for enlarging knockouts in electrical boxes). Really great solution that keeps a precise center.

Thank you so much. I bought a dremel then a bit kit (it was taking forever), then I found this. Wish I had found this first. I went to Lowe's (was a bit pricey) then Harbor Freight (much more reasonable). It enlarged 38 holes on my wooden Christmas tree so I could add LED lights. I can't thank you enough!

Thank you. This was very helpful. I had to install a new peephole on the front door and the hole was smaller for the replacement peephole.
My next trip was at harbor frieght, picked up the single piece step drill bit with 20% off coupon. $5 bucks later, i have a new peephole.

This video just saved my life. Lol. I’m working on a railing and the damn new spindles won’t fit in the holes. Just need them to be a bit wider. Thanks a lot 👍🏻

I need to do this to a guitar and had this exact same idea today - I feel vindicated!

Eh...im just gonna use drill bit and go round and round. I'm installing an on/off button on my guitar. So the hole edge will be covered by a lip of metal on the button housing.

Or you can screw a board on top of it temporarily and mark it back out, then drill through both, unscrew the top board and there you go. This is a little bit tougher with a paddle bit than a standard but it works

After you used the step up bit can you use a regular drill bit, instead of the bit you used?
