Really interesting publishing history— I’m glad you brought attention to that. Literature is full of stories where a neglected story suddenly takes off. Never give up, writers!

This is my favorite HPL story. And I liked the escape bits.
Imagine how intense this was in the 1930's.

The atmosphere in this story is great, even the tiniest events feel important

I tried reading another piece by Lovecraft, I believe it was called "the labyrinth". I couldn't get a few pages in because of the way he goes on an on about details. But I fell in love with listening to an audiobook of "shadow over innsmouth". It's like listening to an old friend tell an old tale

Reread this today in readiness for my Manchester HP Lovecraft Appreciation Society group MeetUp.
Totally agree with your analysis. The deep, uncaring cold and darkness of the ocean, a window into a larger mythos, but all anchored very believabley in our world.

One of my favorite tales is the Music of Erich Zann. I recommend it if you haven't read it yet

Dagon and Shadows over Innsmouth are my two favourite Lovecraft stories.

This story was turned into a top notch movie called Dagon. On a book note you should read Clickers by J.F. Gonzalez. It is a tribute to old B style monster movies and Lovecraft.

Top 5 for me are
Colour Out of Space
Rats in the Walls (scariest)
Shadow Over Innsmouth
Pickman's Model
The Music of Eric Zann

I loved this story. I’m doing my Lovecraftober reads, and this was high up there for me. You aren’t kidding about the ending. It sent me on a mind trip! Dunwich Horror is one of my favorites as well.

Reading Mountains of Madness now, so I intend to get to this sometime in near future. The creepy fish people sound totally up my alley 🐟!

The Call of Cthulu video game was inspired by Shadow Over Innsmouth. This was a truly creepy tale

I love Innsmouth and really anything that takes place there. I know one of the more recent Lovecraft video games takes place there and the Innsmouth expansion to Arkham Horror board game is INSANE levels of hard.

Beware the Innsmouth look!

Oddly Lovecraft's stories never scared me. I only thought them weird. And now I know why, I love the sea and its creatures, and everything squiddy and slimy is fascinatingly miraculous and delightful for me. But I'm a hobby-savior of stranded jelly-fish.

The village I grew up in was a bit like Innsmouth. Not so much the seaside setting, but definitely the mutants!
