What is Kepler 452b (Earths' Bigger 'Cousin') Like?

Показать описание
NASA made a landmark announcment, an earth-like planet that may be able to support life and teach us more about our own planet! Kepler 425b orbits an older sun, Kepler 425, but has a number of differences from Earth. What would it be like if earth humans traveled there? What might dominant life on Kepler 425b be like?

Kim Horcher discusses the research findings so far.

Sounds like we've found the Elcor homeworld. Now all we need to do is find alien jellyfish and teach them how to fight crime.

The only problem is that its 1400 light years away so we are actually looking 1400 years back in time, so we don't even know if it still there or still exists.

OK Shaw and Fujikawa get busy on that slipspace drive.

Earth 2 ! Where everything is like here just a little different, Geek Alert.

I think we need to start looking into faster space travel.

all they really know is the size/mass, the star it orbits and it's distance from that star.
everything else is just artists fantasy, it could look like whatever... so the "earthlike" label is only the cosmological earthlike, not what you would think earthlike would mean. Well sure it could be that too, but there is no way to even remotely find out about that yet, and even if we get to that phase (next phase is atmospheric composition by means of spectroscopy of that tiny tiny amount of light) it will not work with a planet that is so far away (1400 ly) for a very long time.

i know i am the negative nancy here, but this is like most of the other "huge announcements" pretty nifty, but nothing special, in a few month they will find another one that's even more earthlike, and then another one and another one until they will find one, that is exactly the same size, distance and so on, and still we will not be any smarter about what it actually looks like there.

Just think about how different earth looked like over it's lifespan.

when seti makes an announcement like "we received a picture from another planet" or something similar, then i will flip the table.

I would also assume that with the news of renewed effort to discover any intelligent alien life through detection by radio signals that they would also be listening in on Kepler 425b as well.

We will know much more about this world and others once the James-Webb space telescope is launched and operational in the next decade. SETI is also looking for radio signals from this planet, so who knows maybe we will find out if there is life of some form there.

Also the zoom out shot showing you on your own surprised me because I thought you were talking to someone else with you. Set looks too big when just one person :S

Sadly with our current technology we can't know but assuming there is water and plant life it would be interesting to see if the gravity difference affected the plants.  IE, if it would cause them to be denser/larger or perhaps would hinder growth and most plants and trees would be smaller and live shorter life spans.

As soon as I heard "Thick atmosphere" I know it was going to to turn out to be some Venusian shit hole. (ಥ_ಥ)

to say we will never get there is like saying the earth is flat. we don't know what kind of propulsion systems will be invented or we may be able to fold space. everything our biggest science fiction writer has written so far we've done it. if you know mathematics it dont stop at e=mc2 we can add so much more to that one formula alone.

Instead of speculating about possible planets thousands of light years away, why don't we just focus on Titan? It has everything we need to colonize, and it is within our reach today.  Let's get realistic, we possibly will never figure out faster-than-life travel( and please save your womhole theoires to yourselves). But we can colonize our own solar system, beginning with Titan with our current capabilities and tech today, not tomorrow or the next millenia. We should just focus our energy and resources to this first step.
