The Battle Of Barking Creek was a friendly fire incident between Spitfires and Hurricanes in World War 2. John Freeborn and Paddy Byrne of 74 Squadron attacked the Hawker Hurricanes of Monagu Hulton-Harrop and Frank Rose.

Commanded by Adolph Malan, 74 Squadron were part of a force of 116 Royal Air Force aircraft scrambled to intercept an unidentified airplane over the Essex coast line.

The Battle of Barking Creek occurred just 3 days into World War 2. It highlighted weaknesses in the nations RADAR defence system and tragically resulted in the death of a Hurricane pilot, Montagu Hulton-Harrop.

John Freeborn, Adolph Malan and Paddy Byrne would all go on to lead fantastically successful and interesting careers, with all 3 men surviving World War 2.

The Battle of Barking Creek was a tragic incident, and sadly, it wouldn't last friendly fire incident in World War 2.

And “Piece of Cake” ep 1 got the idea from this but changed it to a Blenheim from 64 Squadron as they had no airworthy Hurricanes.
