Lenovo Legion Go Double Battery Capacity

In this video, I’ll take you through the entire process of doubling the battery capacity of my Lenovo Legion Go handheld. While the Legion Go is an excellent device with its large screen and detachable joysticks, one of the main drawbacks is the relatively small battery life when running demanding AAA titles.

I decided to tackle this problem by upgrading the internal battery—a modification that requires sourcing rare parts, custom design work, and some hands-on technical skills. This video covers everything from researching and finding the correct battery cells to disassembling the device, designing a custom back cover, and finally, testing the improved performance.

What You'll Learn:
Identifying the Right Battery: How I sourced rare, custom-made cells to match the original battery specifications.
Disassembly & Modification: Step-by-step instructions on how to safely disassemble the Legion Go and free up internal space for the larger battery.
Custom Back Cover Design: How I designed and 3D-printed a custom back cover to accommodate the new battery using specialized 3D software.
Testing Results: Performance improvements, including a battery life boost from 1.5 hours to nearly 4 hours while running Cyberpunk 2077.
Challenges and Considerations: Issues with the device’s BMS and BIOS not fully recognizing the new capacity, but still offering double the playtime after the percentage drops to 7%.
If you’re interested in modding or just want to extend your handheld’s battery life, this video is for you!

NOTE: Avoid to discharge handheld to ZERO and leave USB connected to peripherals, otherwise you will have to disassemble back cover, remove cable connector from motherboard, start the unit, then connect cable while handheld is ON. Be extra careful not to damage battery cables, those have very gentle insulation.

You need to spot weld the four battery tabs to the existing battery and ditch the 2nd BMS Board. That way, the original BMS will re-calibrate the Full Charge Capacity to double the amount after a full discharge-charge cycle.

Thank you, bro! I just performed this mod thanks to your video instructions! I also challenged a nearby 3D lab to scan my original backplate and create a custom one with stand support based on it. I'm experiencing issues with incorrect battery capacity too, even after a full charge–discharge–charge cycle, but it's not a problem for me.

Wow dude. Good job. Love how you casually insert how you upgraded the memory like it's a given. If I owned one of these and you were offering the service - I'd gladly pay to have it upgraded.

If manufacturers were forward thinking enough, options like this would be available from the manacturer. Imagine them selling double sized batteries as an option and being able to sell a bigger cover etc. Docks that added additional cooling capacity so the machine could run faster whilst docked etc. They really don't think about this stuff as a way to make more money. p.s. Great job :)

man I've been waiting for someone to do this since purchase, i hope to figure out the bms thing then I'm 100% sure I'll use that mod too

This is great ! I don't know why Lenovo can't offer something like this from the beginning !!!

You can just buy extra 10000mah LiPo cells or replace the current one. All you need to do is add extra cells until you can't get any more to fit inside the device. I've done something similar to my phone. from 5000mah it's now running 2000mah, just use the same BMS. Hope this helps

You need to find a Lenovo laptop battery with roughly 100wh then use the bms from that to work with your battery. That will work! I've been doing this for a while 👍🏻

Awesome work Elnur! Will be following along for the Journey and hopefully it will be a viable mod once complete!

For me I think a cool legion go project would be to forego the joycons and dock the screen via pogo pins into a clamshell case with extra battery, more ports and built in controller much like a GPD Win Mini / Max form factor.

It seems cool, but a lot of work, a headache, and tech know how i use Power Bank for a laptop, okay with my battery. Also, it gets rid of kickstand thats a no-go. The ram thing is more useful, in my opinion. I like it stock so far. I may do a skin

I thoroughly enjoyed watching your progress. Are you attempting to modify the bios now to accommodate your changes? Would love to keep up with your project.

awesome job for testing, but mixing double batteries that don't have the same battery circle is dangerous because the BMS should measure the voltage per each cell per charge and know when to stop charging for each cell, ask chatgpt for more details, anyway I watched the whole video and it's a great content 😊

Not really an expert, but i suggest replacing the bms with a new uncalibrated bms. Not unless you have a contact from BYD and provide you with necessary tools to properly rewrite the initial calibration of the cells.

Also don't forget to balance the cells before attaching it to the bms.

Also i noticed it's 3.88v nominal per cell. And it's on series.

You can try your luck looking for a 7.76v-8.5v nominal with large capacity as long as it doesn't go beyond 8.9v maximum voltage when fully charged. (Or limit it by programming the BMS to have the max output of 8.9v)

Though i doubt you can find one since 3.7v nominal and 4.2v max is the standard. Rarely you can find 3.8v nom 4.4v max.

Have you made any further progress with this? Were you able to modify the BIOS to show the change in hardware?

Some local sellers in my country are doing battery modding for Rog Ally Z1E, give it a 72wh laptop battery and it's pretty great compare to upgrading to Rog Ally X which is double Rog Ally Z1E price

Legion go 2 should be 80Whr battery at minimum

what do you think about the 77.6wh battery on aliexpress, could this work too?

I will like to get the ram and the battery upgraded on my Legion go. But i dont feel comfortable doing the ram upgrade and mess something up. the battery seems to be less risky because you only working with the new one and not the original. I dont have a 3D printer either. I wanted to ask if you offer both services ?
