If you don't scream "eat my mämmi" at someone this Easter, you've failed.

"But you're a foreigner in Finland, you must! Eat my mämmi!!" Yup. That's the primary use for mämmi. You visit Finland, you eat it.

But you don't ask "trick or treat", you whip people with the decorated willow branch, chant some spells, and get treats for that. So it's nothing like halloween!

The only time of the year we get to touch grass while in the safe solitude of our home.

nothing is scarier than a finnish person chasing you all over the globe with glass bowl and yelling "Eat my mämmi!" behind you.

Here on Easter going door to door wearing costumes is about wishing people good health and prosperity, not threatening to do something unpleasant to the home owner if they don't give treats. That's why I prefer our tradition to Halloween 😊

Memma (as it is called in Swedish supermarkets), definitely tastes much better than it looks. Best served with vanilla ice cream or heavy whipping cream. Not excessively sweet but rather high in insoluble fibres.

Virpominen is not begging for sweets. These little witches bring good luck to every house they visit. They deserve their reward.

Real question is, why are "Trick or treaters" blackmailing for sweets?

The "dressing up as witches" being mixed with "going around houses begging for candy" is an interesting mix of western and eastern Finnish influences.
