I don't think the conduit example proves you don't need to center punch. The bit still visibly walks on the conduit. So if you don't really care about where the hole goes on the round stock, the feature is probably useful. But if it must be located with some precision, you still need a good center punch. (I use a Starrett 18c that is one of my favorite tools).

I'm by no means a luddite ... I own a CNC, 3d printer and fix / build electronics as a hobby. In my career in industrial woodworking it was nearly always electrical faults that would trigger a call to the repair technician then if you were lucky the problem would be a simple relay that was in stock locally instead of a logic board that had to be shipped via row boat from Italy.

That's the situation with a basic $25k slider on a service contract. This is a <$2000 drill press .... when (not if) an electronic component goes will I be able to diagnose the problem easily and find replacement components. I can find and fix relays and capacitors however if a surface mounted component on the logic board goes or the screen dies 5 - 10 - 15 years down the road my 'smart' drill press becomes a boat anchor.
