Great video. Backs up Mazda. I bought my spotless 2004, six years ago with 25k on the clock and have enjoyed every 10k miles in it so far. The CD never worked but that was no issue. I have flooded it twice and after reading the manual it has never happened again (Point 1 above). The manual also tells you how to de-flood, easily. Replaced faulty L2 last year. Occasionally the coolant light comes on during long trips. It goes off when I dissipate the engine heat by running the internal heaters on full and opening the windows - phew! I love this car and your posts.

I got one about a month ago, had the engine removed now im waiting for my new engine ported and turbo, when I was a young I had the 1979, 1981 1985, rx2, rx4 and the Cosmo, now im 55, kids are gone so I'm going to make my rx8 a beast, by the way my new engine is from the 80s, so i don't have to be afraid of engine failure because this engines can take abuse, not like the engine on it. 😊

Thanks for spreading the RX-8 love! Might want to add a caption linking to your "second car alternatives" at the end of the video, so people can click directly on it ;) Keep it up!

I think your videos are good, and I’ve had a few rotaries over the years. Like any car you can drive it cold but just be gentle until she gets to normal operating temp. No synthetic oil as stated by Mazda. Red line once a while and or use seafoam or equivalent.

I don't know what it says on your RX-8, but on mine it says PREMIUM RECOMMENDED. If it said just unleaded recommended, then you can use regular gas (or 87). Please, use premium in your RX-8. Not because it's fancier or whatever reasons. 98 burns better, and the car is tuned for 98, hence y he said if you hear knocks or pings, you should switch. And for premixing, you SHOULD premix, and here's why: Mazda has the OMP set up for this particular reason, to lubricate the APEX seals. There's 2 things that are wrong though. 1: Mazda had to pass emission standards, so the OMP does not kick in properly until your engine is revved over 4k RPM (forgot exact number). This was done so that when car idles at emissions, sniffer tests will pass. So, basically, there's no oil injected into your engine at low RPM. This is a problem for city and daily drivers. Most of the time we shift at 4k (I usually do 3k). So we're putting miles on our RX-8's without lubricating our seals! Believe it or not! I have premixed for 2 years since I owned the car (started slowly, small doses, now I'm doing 1:1) and I'm not suffering from anything. Every now and then I throw in an 8oz bottle of Lucas fuel injector cleaner just to clean stuff up. Also, the premix adapter is also not better than throwing premix into the fuel tank. That adapter pumps 2 stroke oil only when the OMP injects oil, and that's a problem for reasons I stated above, OMP kicks in too late. Many have tuned their cars to have the OMP kick in at lower RPM. 2: The oil injected into the engine by the OMP is 4-stroke oil, which does not burn as well, and can cause carbon deposits on the rotors (also a very bad thing). So regularly redlining the car (at least once per drive) helps prevent those buildups of carbon.

is it advisable to use seafoam to control the carbon build up? I have been babying mine and every now and then when I open it up, it smokes a lot as it rids the carbon build up. what is your take?

I drive mine in -30degrees Celsius winters and still drives fine

i badly want to buy a rx8 or a rx7, but the most ive fear is that the user before me made these mistakes and my engine wouldnt live long. to bad that i cant order a new rx anymore.... hope mazda bring them back in the future.

So actually it's better to wait about 1 minute when starting cold then drive mildly until warmed up and the whole revving high every once in a while doesnt raise your engine temp enough to have an effect it just shortens the life of your transmission plus on newer models they fixed this problem by rerouting the coolant lines and if your experiencing knock it's not because of the gas your using there is a bigger issue you need to fix even if higher octain fuel temporarily gets rid of the knock it will come back everything else I agree with but I would say the bigger issue with short trips is the extra strain on your tranny your engine and your brakes even though it does cause more carbon build up that is a small portion of the damage done.

So funny.... Most people do not remember the days of the carbs. Also, most people do not take care of a car the way they should because they are lazy. ANY car can flood but with FI, it is harder to do on most cars. The biggest thing about these cars is using 2 stroke oil. The OMP can clog up and not put as much oil to the seals as it should. Using 2 stroke, solves this. I have almost 150k miles on my rx8 and, the only issue was a fuel pump about a year ago. Change all fluids every 30k miles and rev it from time to time, keep ignition in good shape, change oil every 3k and use regular oil and you will be just fine. Laziness on any car will make it have a short life.
