This was written in the 1830s as the song of the emerging Anti-Slavery Movement, that was based in New England, hence the words, "Pilgrims pride". The Union victory with the end of slavery in the Great and horrible Civil War, by far the bloodiest war in the history of the United States, made this a national patriotic song for Americans.
