When thinking about water storage and the amount needed some the water is for brushing your teeth, you can use a spray bottle to wet and rinse your toothbrush. That saves a lot of water usage. Doing dishes, spray bottle with half water half vinegar. Something’s can be done with water in a spray bottle when you really take the time to think about it and then save the rest for drinking and food prep. A suggestion I always tell people is to live without electricity and tap water for 3 days and 2 nights to see how you really do. It helps guide you a lot. Love the challenge!

Suggest that if you have a lot of freeze dried foods you increase your potable stored water by at least half. Canned food is open and eat, but for freeze dried you NEED water.
When canning empty canner space is filled with a jar of water, some plain tap, some filtered, some salted (1/2 tsp/pint), some with electrolytes, all clearly labeled. They can accumulate quickly and no plastic worries.

For water collection for our veggies, non-drinking needs, we just set out a few kid pools in the yard to collect rain water! Free!

Thank you for sounding like you enjoy life not like you are joining the army but just using common sense so tired of the fear mongering. Thank you!

Something I’ve started doing is using my empty bleach bottles and liquid laundry detergent bottles to store water that can be used for cleaning as there will be some detergent or bleach residue in the bottles. I clearly mark the bottles “emergency water for cleaning only. Do not drink!”The water could be used for washing laundry, dishes, or even people.

Then of course have potable water on hand also for drinking and cooking.

This is EXACTLY what I needed to help me focus my preparations for the next 100 days or so.
Thank you!!!

I have a few hundred gallons of water stored in my apartment. Under my bed, under sofa, under sinks, in closets, in baskets, where ever I can find a place. It's in 6 gallon jugs, 5 gallon jugs, 2.5 jugs, juice jugs, 1 and 2 liter bottles. I drink a lot of 16 oz bottles of Sprite and recently decided to start filling those with water too. I also have a water bladder for the tub. I have an Alexapure water filter, Zero water filter and water purification tablets. I live alone with my 2 cats so no one is complaining about my prepared craziness lol. I started 8 years ago for my 4 kids and their families and myself.

Right now my biggest challenge is my disability. I live prominently on the third floor of my house. So getting down the stairs is difficult. But I do already have about 10 gallons of filtered water already stored in clean glass bottles that I disinfected myself. Now, with my husband's help we plan on getting at least another 50 gallons done in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for all of the great info and encouragement.

I was able to get blue 55 gallon barrels from our feed store for $21 each. People use them for their animals. They previously had juice concentrate in them. So I just rinsed and bleached them. Then filled them with water and a bit more bleach. And yes I will filter the water before drinking. Easy and cheap.

Great info! When we have to use our bottled water, we refill it and mark it “Tap Water.” In an emergency situation we can use it for utility purposes, saving unopened for consuming. Your book is a wonderful resource. I gave copies to all the family a few years ago.

This is a great idea and wonderful way to keep focused. Biggest challenge is living in the desert without any great water sources. OT - I am so jealous of your cast iron collection!

Thank you for your many ideas to help us. My wife & I live in a condo with very little storage. We have some water stored in plastic, but we have 2 baths. I bought a 60 gal water bladder for a bathtub, a 3 gallon jug & a hand pump. We also have several 5 gallon buckets to catch rain water. To purify the water, we have a 2 1/4 Berkey gravity purifier & for travel, a katadyne & aqua tablets.

We're getting a pitcher pump installed on our well so we can still get water even if the power goes out.
