How to enable and using Linux (Ubuntu) on Windows 10 with "Bash on Ubuntu on Windows!" In this video I'm using the Insiders Build 14379 which you can get now OR you can wait for Windows 10 Anniversary Edition coming soon!

UPDATE: I failed to mention that you need to enable "Developer Mode" in Windows Settings. Sorry for the omission.

Thank you Scott! I just installed Bash on Ubuntu on Windows and it's working perfectly.

For my current job I use a Windows machine. I missed Bash a lot as I used a Mac in previous jobs.

Thanks, Scott. Known about this for a while, but this inspired me to fire up a Hyper-V instance and try it out. Cool stuff!

Great stuff. I develop on Ubuntu at work and run a VM in Hyper-V at home. It works ok, but it is pretty heavy and uses a lot of resources. Also for some reason, things run really slow in Hyper-V. I really look forward to being able to run native binaries without at VM.

If you're a command-line-person, here's how you can enable the Windows subsystem for Linux:
PowerShell:
    Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName
CMD:
    dism.exe /online /Enable-Feature
What I don't know is how to reset it. In the first versions you would only run as root. How can I reset this to create another account and not run as root?

Bash on Windows + VcXsrv (or other x server programs) + PulseAudio server on Windows = graphical apps and Desktop Environments (like XFCE4 and Ubuntu Unity) running natively in Windows.

Thanks, nice tutorial, on the newer version of Windows 10, you do have to enable Developers Mode.

New to all this. So you're installing different programs in order to be able to run commands from them? Like for example Git? You could just input Git commands and they will work, no matter how many other programs you have installed? Their unique commands will all work from Bash? Also, where is all this stuff saved too assuming you save projects?
