Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon offered his deepest condolences on Thursday to the families of five of the victims of the 2014 Sewol-ho ferry disaster whose bodies could not be recovered despite a months-long search.
He also backed a bill to reinvestigate the disaster that claimed over 300 lives, most of them high school students.

At Thursday's state agenda meeting,... the prime minister backed a bill to reinvestigate the Sewol-ho ferry sinking, which will be put to a vote in parliament.
If the bill is passed, a special committee will be created to investigate the tragedy again for a maximum of three years.

"A bill to reinvestigate the Sewol-ho ferry disaster will be submitted to the parliament's plenary session on Friday. We hope the bill gets the green light, enabling a special investigative committee to be formed."

A team of rescue workers had sought to find the last nine missing victims when the ferry was raised from the seabed and brought to a dry dock at Mokpo port in early April.
But only the bodies of four victims were found.

"The missing victims' families have waited for three years and seven months in the ports of Jindo and Mokpo cities... for the bodies to be recovered. But have made the decision to not demand a further search"

The accident is estimated to have cost the nation over 5-hundred-fifty million U.S. dollars, including compensation to the bereaved families.
More than 3-hundred people died in the Sewol-ho ferry disaster on April 16th 2014, most of them teenage students on a school trip.
