Java or Kotlin for Android Development – Which One Is Better?

A question I often get asked is, "Which one is better for Android App Development? Is it Kotlin or Java?" Let's find out more about it in today's video.

Did you know there's a lot of factors and things that you'll need to overcome to become a programmer that aren't specifically related to coding?

My name is Tim Buchalka and I have put together a series of videos which I call the "Programming Tip of the Day". And basically, each video goes through talking about some of the pitfalls and things that you'll need to overcome to succeed as a programmer, things like overcoming frustration and keeping yourself motivated.

In this series I will also answer common questions about choosing a programming language to learn, questions about your career path and things of that nature. Now there's a lot of other things as well that I'll cover in these videos and I'm also opening the lines for you to tell me what you want me to cover.

Now I've been a programmer for over 35 years so I think I'm real qualified to answer a lot of these questions. So if you do have a question, pop the question in the comments section of this video and I'll do my best to address that in a future video.

If you are reading this in 2021 and just want to get going with Android development, it's OK to start with Kotlin. To really get to the intermediate or advanced level you're going to need to understand Java to some extent.

Luckily, Java and Kotlin fit together better than any other language combo I can think of.

I was enjoying the video and absent-mindedly admiring how clean and straight the decal on his shirt was, until 2:25 when his fingers passed BEHIND the decal, indicating that the logo image was tracked to his shirt in post production! Fooled me!

Hope moving from Java to kotlin is easy enough. I can't start courses over and over every time I think I've found "the one" language to learn

The question here is that if i am new to programming to what level should i learn java before transition to kotlin? Do i just learn the basics or going further is necessary? and please recommend me certain courses to learn java to the point it would be enough before going to kotlin because the idea of learning 2 programming lang. just to create android apps is not appealing to me, I just to learn one lang. master it and use it but with kotlin the problem is lack of resources and project ideas and codes on the internet so i know i will get stuck at some point.

Hello some programmers say that most of the Android applications are not used and also in the future it may be due to having other Android applications. What do you think about this? thank you for your answer

Sir as suggested by you to learn design pattern and data structure and algorithm after java. I'm confused a little. It's 2020. Currently I'm studying your java masterclass in Udemy. But as you mentioned kotlin is rapidly closing the gap between it and Java. So when my java masterclass will be finished in mid 2020.
1.What should i learn after that?
2. There must be design pattern and data structure and algorithm courses of kotlin like of Java? If it's should i take it?
Thank You

But what about the large amount of java code that is already out there in the android echosystem, I don't see job applications for Kotlin programmers as much as java, swift and React for mobile apps?

I pay close attention to the Dutch job market. There are a lot of Java projects being migrated from Java to Kotlin for Android development. The majority of those who start from scratch also pick Kotlin.

LOL.. I’m still trying to figure out android as well as Java.

Now this🤯 I guess I will have to look around and see what’s out there for Kotlin...😳

My project was written in Java. I think about learning Kotlin too, but then I realize why not switch to Dart/Flutter. Two birds one stone.
