Actually a magician by the name of Marc DeSouza was the first to "use this move" as he was the creator of it. Blaine used it in his first TV special "Street Magic" and thus made it much more mainstream.

Try letting the pressure off of the thumb, you can alternate the spin by switching the finger that releases first. Hope that helps.
