One of the things that I see that improves the change effect is the movement of pulling away the hand away from the deck and the thumb which diverts the attention from the card angle change as in 5:28m and specially 5:40m.

I already know the change but thanks for the suggestion of using the crotch of the thumb. I am gonna use that one because it does look more magical! A lot of great tips about the Shapshifter change in this video.
