MEGA SUB! World’s BIGGEST SUBMARINE ever constructed! (Soviet Typhoon/Akula Class Submarine.)

This is the legendary Akula class submarine (the biggest in the world) that inspired the book and movie, The Hunt for Red October.

Constructed by the U.S.S.R and first deployed in 1981, this gigantic, nuclear-powered submarine is the biggest ever made.

Known by NATO as the Typhoon, it measures 175 meters in length (that’s about 570 feet) and displaces a whopping 48,000 tons when submerged.

Its twin pressurized-water nuclear reactors produce 255,000 thousand horse-power, each, so it can travel quietly at over 50 kilometres per hour.

Designed to operate for months on end beneath the polar icecap, the Typhoon is armed with 20 nuclear ballistic missiles, each equipped with 10 multiple re-entry vehicle warheads. This means that the ice-breaking Typhoon can single-handedly shower a Western opponent with 200 nuclear warheads.

Six of these devastating Cold-War-era machines were built, thankfully, due their age and budget constraints; there remains only one Typhoon in active service.

***The Music*** -- called "Hitman" -- was composed by the benevolent, very talented, internet legend, Mr. Kevin MacLeod of Incompetech:

I didn't know that this sub was designed with 4 or 5 inches of rubber all over its hull. To eliminate sounds coming from within and to minimize detection from without. Simple and smart, like most great ideas.

It would be somewhat scary to be on the beach and watch that "Sea Monster" go by...especially knowing what it can do.

Akula and Typhoon are two different classes. ones a Fast Attack SSN and the other is a Ballistic Missile Boat, SSBN. The Typhoons were and are gigantic but way too expensive to operate. The Russians don't need a boat that big. They have Smaller, more capable SSBN in their inventory. I'm not talking out of school either, I am a US Navy Qualified Submariner and played Gate Guard with the Soviets when they came out of their 3 East Coat Ports in the 1980's.

I'd love to see the inside. I saw the inside of an old ww2 US sub at a museum once but it looks like a paddle boat compared to this behemoth!

so with 6 of these subs launching all of its missiles, 1200 warheads will come flying to any designated target. That's quite scary.

This is a typhoon class. Its SICBM vessel. Not a hunter sub.
