It's when Livia realizes that Claudius was just as good, if not better than her own self at wearing a mask and finally sees Claudius is fully qualified at playing the game.

It suddenly became obvious that Claudius was putting on an act since his youth.

The payoff of this scene! You get through so much chaos and conflict, you witness the family being cruel to Claudius repeatedly, and THEN Livia finally realizes that Claudius is reliable and strangely powerful! Wow! And they're both such brilliant actors! โ™ฅ

Livia played the game her whole life, killed to get her way, had spies everywhere, knew when someone so much as sneezed if they were under her scope, yet she was completely oblivious to the fact that Claudius was putting on an act.
In the end, when finally facing her own mortality, and knowing that her actions put a madman on the throne, Claudius was the only one she could grovel to. Quite the story arc.

Superb scene! Cladius' transformation in seconds from stuttering half wit to a quiet, strong, and intelligent man, is astounding. What an actor, Derek Jacobi. And Sian Phillips as the scheming Livia. I remember this series so well back in late 70's when I saw it. Livia painted the apples on a tree with poison to kill Tiberius. Painted them! So they looked fresh on the tree but when you ate them... kaput!

20 years after watching this in Latin class and I still think of this scene from time to time. The confrontation and acknowledgement after so many years...

I love Livia's arc in this series; it gave me chills to see her finally recognizing and even appreciating Claudius here; the 2 leading figures in this series finally face to face, masks off - and Sian Phillips is so incredible (as is Jacobi) - her Livia gave rise to 2 formidible successors - Tony Soprano's mother, Livia, who David Chase said was inspired by this character, and also Sian Phillips' own turn in Dune as Gaius Helen Mohaim, which is infused w the spirit of Livia, and her famous earlier role may well have led to Sian's casting in Lynch's film

This series used a grand total of about fifty actors and was shot entirely on a sound stage and it's absolutely brilliant and worth watching more than forty years later. Modern shows with budgets in the hundreds of millions; Star Trek Discovery, She Hulk, The Acolyte, can't hold a candle to it. Great writing and great acting, that's all it takes, but Hollywood can't figure that out.

I remember seeing this scene and being gobsmacked to realize that perhaps the stutter was an act all along.

Jeez! I had forgotten how wonderful that series was. I'd also forgotten what a wonderful actress Sian Phillips was. Just that barely two minute clip was like going from Lady Gaga to Mozart (And I really like LG sometimes).

Wonderful scene! But Livia first mocks Tiberius, because he wants to be loved when dead, and then she wants to be a goddess in the afterlife. And she does not feel foolish at all about it.

Despite everything Livia did to Claudius, he still loved his Grandmother.
