You are giving him way too much credit by trying to imagine a thought process inside Trump.

He wants what makes him popular. Being anti-abortion makes him popular with loyal followers. That’s it.

He doesn't calculate, he doesn't struggle with how to articulate his position; he doesn't have his own position. He wants attention and validation, so he does what gets him that.

He has the emotional maturity of a baby, and his intellectual capacity isn't much better. He reacts on instinct, he is hungry for attention and validation and he follows that, even if it means doing what he's told to do by smarter, more cunning people who do have very particular ideological agendas.

He's an idiot, and he's a figurehead for the far-right conservative dark money establishment.
