I had an XP MI4 and found it hard to hear on windy days.

As you mentioned the pinponter basically should put you right on your target. I don't think that the depth should really factor especially once you have dug your plug.
I just ordered a Pro 40 and will see how well it does. I have read many reviews about the previous Minelab pinpointers and many claim the tendency to false a lot. The Pro 40 is the same price as the Nokta Accupoint so hopefully it will justify the cost! I have the Carrot along with the Accupoint. The Accupoint is the most featureous pinpointer I have seen.

You need the depth especially if your target is hidden in a big plug. I have had that problem before.

I don´t know, but 40 is quite misbehaved. It picks false signals, then freaks out and when I reset it (or to factory reset), the signal is gone.
Otherwise if something is there, it finds it. Turn on and off or triple checking makes the searching somewhat cumbersome.

Is Garrett more reliable? Thank you!

Minelab needs to step up and make their pinpointers heard over their headphones just like with the Garrett.
