Just discovered your channel. Really interesting and nostalgic content for an old school nerd like me.

Windows ME. That’s always been my fave OS. 💻

So performance-wise they're practically the same. Compatibility and DOS support seems to be the difference then. Thanks for tackling this!

I'm really not surprised here. Thanks for tackling this anyway. Looking forward to future content and builds .

I was using ME until 2003, where I got a copy of XP - before I tried 2k, but unfortunately most of my games told me back then, that NT wasn't supported.
I liked ME and 2k both a lot, but I sticked to ME until XP.

Nevertheless, because I played a lot dos-games, ME was my first choice.

So, I never understood people why they were so mad and angry about ME, in my case 98SE gifted me quite more with bluescreens as ME.

I got two years ago an old Dell P3-Laptop and last week I installed ME on it, thanks to Phil.

I regret nothing!

I have a retro PC with Athlon XP, 768MB of RAM and MX440 running Millenium Edition :D Works well for playing Medal of Honor :D

I had Me when it was current, and honestly, I never really had any more issues than in 98, really. I mean, once I started using Windows 2000, I didn't look back, but that's mostly just because the NT kernel has always been so much better.

My firsl real computer was an amd athlon 1700+ with 256 mb ram 32mb onboard graphics. I'll remember it forever. I played aoe 2, viper racing, midtown madness 1&2 and many more on it. Those games still fresh to me everytime!

Nothing wrong with ME, you can allways dual boot ME and Dos 6.11 using plop and you will have the best of both worlds.

I think I mentioned it in chat to you but what would be interesting to see is if all the unofficial service packs performance tweaks actually make a difference or are they all "SnakeOil" I have a feeling they actually slow things down in terms of startup times and general in windows tasks...

Well, I'm glad we sorted that out so I can get on with building my new PC!

i prefer win98SE for DOS, so i can play 386/486 and win95/98 games on one machine without dosbox

you should compare Windows 98 with an unofficial Service Pack and windows Millennium Edition with unofficial Service Pack. I know for 98 I usually install those to give more modern networking support for example. I would like to know if installing some unofficial packs actually hurts game performance or doesn't really matter

Phil, please, put the WinXP on the fight to compare. Recently I upgraded my main rig and decided to upgrade the OS from Win7 to Win10 and even on a 5-year-old machine I almost boost 10fos on some games. I want to know if this can cause the same on old hardware. Great video, now I'm gonna consider using WinME for my builds.

The main problem with ME was basically RAM usage. If you had tested this with a PC with 64 or 128MB of SDRAM 133 like back in the day, the performance difference would have been noticeable.

And that's why I chose ME for my retro PCs, it offers the same performance but is sold for much less on ebay.

Can you do a video on updating Windows ME with the unofficial service pack (especially on which one) and how to enable running real DOS from either a boot floppy and the patch?
