Better option. Estimate the distance altogether

You estimate the distance to estimate the distance

In the military, you use your fingernail for people. If they're about your fingernail, it's around 100m.

How am I supposed to know what a car is like at that distance.

As an American I can confirm this is how our measuring system works

For those wondering, this is called parallax.

This is called parallax shift and is used a lot in astronomy and astrophysics to calculate the distances of many things! Really cool stuff :]

Fun fact this is called parallax and it’s how astronomers measured the distances to nearby stars. It’s also where the term parsec comes from, standing for parallax-second and it represents the distance to an object that exhibits a parallax of 1 arc second or 1/3600 of a degree

Yes it is known as the parallax effect a similar method is used to measure the distances between earth and other celestial objects such as planets, stars and such. Pretty cool

This is an ancient technique that's been used by marksmen for centuries and with practice, it becomes quite consistent. Especially if there's an object of known size at the distance you're trying to gauge, like a window(usually 1m), a person(1.6-2m), etc

Fun fact: this was a common practice to do with bombs during time of war, which lead to the inspiration of the iconic "Vault Boy Thumbs Up" from the Fallout franchise.

This is how you can tell if you’re too close to a nuclear blast. If your thumb can cover the mushroom cloud completely, you’re presumably ‘safe’.

It's called the parrallax method usually used to measure distances to moon and celestial bodies generally doen with telescopes and calculations as the distance is the and angle between thumb positions into thdividing the estimated length between postions

This is why the Fallout Boy in the fallout games is shown with a thumbs up, because he’s using this method to measure the cloud from the nuclear bomb. If it’s larger than his thumb he is supposedly in the radiation zone.
