Video shows plane carrying 61 people fall from the sky in Brazil

AP: A passenger plane crashed into a gated residential community in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state Friday, killing all 61 people aboard and leaving a smoldering wreck, officials and the airline Voepass said.

Can't fly if the engines aren't working. I do wonder if the engines could be turned on or off remotely, like some cars. If so, this could be a hit.

Lo más probable es una entrada en pérdida seguida de una barrena por acumulación de hielo sobre las alas (Considerando la meteorología y la tendencia a acumular hielo de esta aeronave).
Lamentable que no se haya logrado recuperar de la pérdida siendo que se dió a 17000 pies ( aprox 5182 metros). Dada la altitud de inicio de la caída, descarto Windshear..
No hay sobrevivientes. Lamentable!!!!....

Forgot it's winter down there. 17000 ft. Light rain reported. Those over wing props ice up quick (think Buffalo crash a few years ago). Icing is a better guess.

I don't know why the plane was going so slow, but it is evident that the tail plane was holding the nose up until there was not enough down force to maintain that. Then the nose dropped - a consequence of the loss of aerodynamic down force from the tail. But then the nose lifted so that the plane was pancaking. That was possibly pilot action hoping to avoid hitting the ground - maybe hoping to power through the situation.. It seems the starboard wing stalled causing the plane to rotate about 180 degrees. And from there the plane was no longer an aerodynamic object - it just fell to the ground. The image of the crashed plane shows the upper fuselage above the cockpit is not damaged, suggesting the aircraft was horizontal when it hit the ground - no nose dive. I'd assume the most important question is why the aircraft was so slow: maybe loss of engine power, and the pilots were hoping to fly through the problem. One of the first things a pilot learns is stall recovery. We don't know what caused the aircraft to be in the initial situation: very slow with no stall recovery action. We can't jump to conclusions - the cockpit voice recorder might give the first clues.
Another report shows that an event happened at a high altitude: the plane went into a dive and then climbed rapidly, and at that point it commenced its uncontrolled descent to the ground. So that's where the problem - the flat spin - probably started.

Those ATR-72's can't take a lot of ice. If that's what caused this crash. That's why airlines stop using them in the northern states.
